Abstract We propose to take diffraction limited near-infrared H-band (1.6 um) NICMOS images of the young NGC 2070 cluster (age 3.5 Myr) in the 30Dor giant HII region in the LMC. The aim is to search for the low-mass (M < 2 M_sun) low-luminosity, red pre- Main Sequence stellar population and to establish the H- band infrared luminosity function. With the NICMOS we can now determine whether the IMF in this prototypical extragalactic starburst cluster is deficient in subsolar low-mass stars or not. The best ground-based data can sample only M > 2 M_sun. In principle, NICMOS in the H- band (F160W) is sensitive enough to reach a magnitude of ~23.5 in a relatively short integration time, which indeed corresponds to the fantastic possibility to detect young stellar objects with masses near the hydrogen burning limit (M = 0.1M_sun) according to pre-Main Sequence evolutionary models. Even if we could reach only H = 22.5 (i.e. M = 0.4 M_sun), the observations proposed here would still go a long way in directly answering, by star counts, whether the IMF in starburst galaxies is low- mass deficient or not, with all the corresponding far-reaching implications. The observations would also tell us whether the 30 Dor cluster can be regarded as a prototype young globular cluster. This possibility would be ruled out, if we found NGC 2070 to be low-mass deficient, because old globular clusters do have a rich population of low -mass stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7370( 9) - 11/20/97 14:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The observations will be carried out with NICMOS in the F160W filter, using both NIC1 (0.045/pixel) in the innermost 20x20 arcsec^2 heavily crowded region and NIC2 (0.075/pixel) in the outer less crowded regions. The inner region will be covered by a 2x2 mosaic of NIC1 frames, plus a central NIC1 frame centred on R136a. The outer region will be covered by a 3x3 mosaic of NIC2 frames (covering roughly the central square arcmin of the cluster, corresponding to about 7.5x7.5 pc^2). In addition, we will add symmetrically two linear extensions of three frames each (see Fig. 2) to fully cover one diameter (160" or 40 pc) of the cluster. The observations will be performed in MULTIACCUM mode, to be able to deal with the saturation of bright objects in long exposure frames. In addition, 6 sky frames (3 with NIC1 and 3 with NIC2) will be taken some 5---10 arcmin north of the cluster and will be used both for sky subtraction and for determining the density of foreground/background sources. At each position, we plan to take 4 dithered images of 10---12 min duration each (the exact time will be determined in Phase II, and will be adjusted for the 4 images and overheads to fill the orbit) which will be used (i) to sample the PSF more finely than with a single image, and (ii) to reject cosmic ray events. Using the exposure time estimators we determined that on single images we would reach H ~23.5 mag and J ~ 24.5 mag with ~ 4 sigma on an isolated source. In practice source crowding will be very important, especially in the cluster center, where it will undoubtedly be the limiting factor. Additionally, our final S/N ratio will also be determined by the amount of extended emission from the HII region. This we estimated from our own ground-based images, and will be ~24---25 mag/pixel in NIC2/F160W on average, though brighter in a few positions. We estimate that with 4 images per position we will reach close to H = 23.5 mag over most of the field covered. We also plan to use NIC1/F110W filter while observing with NIC2/F160W, and vice-versa, which will give us further precious information. This will, in the end, give us a significant amount of J photometry in addition to the H data which is the main goal of our observations. The 30 Dor Work Team The PI has put together a work team with considerable complementary expertise with regard to the planning, reduction, analysis, and interpretation of the observations in question, and several members of the team have significant experience with HST data and with high resolution techniques. In particular, the PI has worked on questions related to the IMF for a long time and has experience with star formation in young cluster and pre-MS evolution (e.g. Zinnecker et al. 1993). Brandl, Brandner, and Eckart have done ground-based adaptive optics observing of R136 and other starburst clusters. McCaughrean and Moneti are real experts in infrared imaging, especially of young clusters, and are collaborating with the PI on ground-based infrared imaging of the 30 Dor region at ESO. Larson has been studying cluster formation and star formation in clusters from a theoretical point of view and has published important paper on these problems. Meylan works on dynamical evolution of clusters (mass segregation etc.). Hunter did the deepest HST imaging of the 30 Dor cluster at optical wavelengths (see Hunter et al. 1995). Rosa is an ECF member, thus most familiar with all the technicalities of HST, and works on giant extragalactic HII regions. Walborn has studied the massive stellar content of 30 Dor for most of his career and has coined the term "30 Dor - Starburst Rosetta Stone" (Walborn 1991). Finally, Weigelt is a leading expert in high spatial resolution techniques; he was the first to resolve the massive stars in R136. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- OBSERVING STRATEGY is as follows: we wish to observe a 3x3 "core" and two 3x1 "wings" extending further out and at 90 degrees from each other. The core and the wings are each repeated 4x with dithering in order to recover bad pixels and the coronographic hole, and for cosmic ray rejection (though much of that will be achieved via the multiaccum frames). The core observations are done with SPIRAL-DITHER and the wings with YSTRIP-DITHER. The first wing positions are at 33" from the core in order to obtain parallel images of the core with NIC1 [NOTE that this could be increased to 34" or even 35"]; in order to accomplish this, one wing is done at 90 deg offset from the other [NOTE: the ORIENT parameter could be either +90D or -90D, but how is this specified?]. Since the "official" dither patterns are used for the mosaicing, the "true" dithering is accomplished by repeating the pattern at previously specified RA/Dec "dither" offsets. These are specified with POS TARG, and result in a lot of warnings that we are offsetting outside the field of view, which is true, so we are ingnoring these warnings. As there are four dithered positions, these have been chosen to be on a N+0.5 pixel square, where N is set to 16, which is twice the size of the coronographic hole, thus also insuring the images are separated by several PSF widths [NOTE: N could be reduced by as much as 4 pixels; The offsets then are 1".2375, which is rounded to 1".238, though 1".24 would probably be more reasonable]. It is desirable for the dither offsets to be along the pixel edges, though it is not clear how best to implement this. The exact orientation of the pattern is not important (in fact there are good reasons to prefer a random orientation), but the only way to ensure this alignement appears to be to specify the correct RA/Dec offsets once the time of the observations, and hence the PA of the pattern, is known; hence the comments about the need to update the offset coordinates. [NOTE: are there more straightforward ways of implementing the dither alignment with the mosaic alignment?] Integration times were chosen to have three (primary) images per orbit. This leaves about 2 min unused at the end of the orbits which have a GS ACQ, and about 6 min at the end of orbits with a GS REACQ. Where the images are not part of the 3x3 rasters, there may be room for improvement by choosing a different multiaccum sequence which would allow slightly longer integration times. This can be done using the sequence STEP64 with NSAMP=23, but this results in so many reads that extra NIC dumps are necessary. NIC1 and NIC3 are being used in parallel. The NIC1 images will be very useful, the usefulness of the NIC3 images will depend by their confocality. Integration times are STEP256,NSAMP=5 as suggested in "Guide to Phase II" document. Open points (in addition to the "NOTEs" in the text above: 1. check fields of sky positions to make sure they are free of bright foreground stars, 2. determine proper flux estimate for sky fields; current estimates are guesses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7370( 9) - 11/20/97 14:01 - [ 3] Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7370( 9) - 11/20/97 14:01 - [ 4] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 30DOR EXT-CLUSTER,OB RA=05H 38M 42.43S +/- 0.5",DEC=- J2000 K = 11.07 ASSOCIATION 69D 6' 2" +/- 0.5" Comments: K mag of R136a from Brandl etal. 1996 100 SKY-1 EXT-CLUSTER,OB RA=05H 38M 42.43S +/- 0.5",DEC=- J2000 K = 15.0 ASSOCIATION 68D 52' 0" +/- 0.5" Comments: Coordinates to be updated, flux unknown 101 SKY-2 EXT-CLUSTER,OB RA=05H 38M 49.64S +/- 0.5",DEC=- J2000 K = 15 ASSOCIATION 68D 52' 0" +/- 0.5" Comments: Coordinates to be updated, flux unknown 102 SKY-3 EXT-CLUSTER,OB RA=05H 38M 56.85S +/- 0.5",DEC=- J2000 K = 15 ASSOCIATION 68D 52' 0" +/- 0.5" Comments: Coordinates to be updated; flux unknown 104 SKY-4 EXT-CLUSTER,OB RA=05H 38M 56.85S +/- 0.5",DEC=- J2000 K = 15 ASSOCIATION 68D 57' 0" +/- 0.5" Comments: Coordinates to be updated, flux unknown 7370( 9) - 11/20/97 14:01 - [ 5] Visit: 01 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: ORIENT 245D TO 275D On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: 1st core of 4; 1st sky1 of 2.
