Abstract We propose to efficiently tile two selected areas of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with a combination of WFPC2 and NICMOS imaging to obtain definitive color- magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for LMC field stars in visual and near-infrared colors. These data will enable us to quantitativly study the intermediate to low-mass stellar populations and the star-formation history of the LMC. Our observations will reach to V=24, which is well below the oldest main-sequence turnoff, and thus we will probe the entire star-formation history of the LMC. Our goal is to observe approximately 10, 000 stars in the region of the CMD from the oldest main sequence turnoff to the lower red giant branch. Such large samples gives us the ability to measure a 20 percent change in the star-formation rate averaged over 1 Gyr intervals at the 2-sigma level. From this data set, we will generate the best CMDs ever obtained for an evolving stellar population in another galaxy. Quantitative comparisons between observed and model CMDs depend on several parameters, and we will compare the data with models using statistically rigorous techniques that we have developed. Comparisons of the results in each area will allow us to separate local from global evolutionary patterns in the LMC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7382( 19) - 11/11/99 16:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain images with WFPC2 in F555W and F814W filters, and in parallel with NIC3 in F110W and F160W filters, in two areas of the LMC: LMC-DISK1 -- the inner disk at the southern edge of the bar near the cluster NGC 1848; and, LMC- BAR -- selected regions in the center of the bar near the cluster Hodge-Sextans 275. We will produce calibrated VI-band CMDs containing 10, 000 or more stars in each region from the oldest main-sequence turnoff to the red giant branch (20.5 <= V <= 22.5). To do so, we will observe 10 and 4 WFPC2 fields in DISK1 and BAR, respectively. The exposure times are driven by the need to obtain precise photometry so that, by modeling the distribution of stars in the CMD, we can determine the star-formation history of the LMC. Our photometric goal is to obtain (V-I) colors with random photometric errors of 0.03 mag at V=23. We can reach this goal by using 2 orbits per pointing to take 4 exposures in each filter and by dithering to increase photometric precision. We need the increased dynamic range of ATD-GAIN=15 to have the brightest possible saturation limit in 500s F55W images (V = 18.3, which is just brighter than the clump horizontal branch in the LMC) while going as faint as possible (S/N=10 at V=25.5). To cover the same magnitude range in F814W, we need short and long exposures of 2x300s and 2x700s. Dithering as many times as possible while remaining inside the 2 orbit/pointing constraint will be crucial since we want to overcome the undersampling of the WF point-spread-functions, flat-fielding errors, hot pixels, etc. In addition, coordinated parallel exposures taken with the NIC3 camera will give us J and H-band photometry for stars in the same magnitude range as those observed with WFPC2. The S/N=10 detection limit on our individual exposures will be H=22.8 and J=23, which approximately corresponds to V=24 stars. Note that the infrared photometry will give us valuable, independent, constraints on the reddening and the metallicities in these fields, and a vital check on the color-temperature relationships used in the stellar evolutionary models. We use a large offset from the initial position to move the (800, 800) cornor of WF3 to a previous (100, 100) position of the PC. We use smaller offsets around these positions for non-integer pixel dithering. By repeating multiple POS TARGs, we will cover strips that are one WFPC2 field wide and multiple WFPC2 fields long, centered around the given target position, with the same orient. Dithering and repeat sampling of stars on WF3 and PC are crucial for overcoming the effects that the undersampled WF point-spread-function will have on photometry of faint stars.
