Abstract The ubiquitous nature of Galactic ``cirrus'' clouds make them both: (1) accessible targets for the study of the properties of interstellar dust grains, and (2) sources of confusion in investigations of distant objects (e.g.\ galaxies, clusters of galaxies) at low surface brightness levels. Since its discovery by IRAS over a decade ago, the cirrus has mostly been studied in the far-infrared (thermal re- radiation by dust). Recent ground-based optical images of the scattered light from cirrus reveal a wealth of structural detail on scales of 10'' to 10' (roughly 0.005- -0.5 pc). We propose to use the WFPC2 in SNAPSHOT mode to obtain F606W (V) and F814W (I) surface photometry of selected regions of bright cirrus complexes. This will enable the first-ever analysis of the cirrus fine structure on scales down to 0sec point3 (a factor of 30 smaller than existing data), a marked increase in the dynamic range of its measured spatial power spectrum. This is crucial for understanding the effect of cirrus on deep extragalactic optical imaging. Ground-based measurements indicate that the mean optical colors of the cirrus are much redder than expected for scattering of ambient starlight, and that there is substantial color variation with position within clouds. The red emission is likely caused by luminescence in very small hydrogenated carbon grains. Our WFPC2 data will provide V-I color maps of unprecedented detail, allowing us to probe the spatial variations in the abundances of various grain species. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7384( 8) - 12/03/98 11:32 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our current database of optical images of bright cirrus clouds includes roughly 75 targets that would be suitable for SNAPSHOT imaging with WFPC2 in terms of both their V-band surface brightness and their on-vs-off cloud brightness contrast. We already have wide-field deep optical CCD images of these clouds at 2''--3'' angular resolution from which we have derived accurate BVRI surface photometry to go with existing 12, 25, 60, and 100, Mum IRAS data. A subset of these clouds are being observed with ISO (in collaboration with Francois Boulanger) and these will be given highest priority for the HST SNAPSHOT survey. We request guide star acquisition and fine-lock since high angular resolution imaging is crucial to this program. We also request a one- year proprietary data rights period. For each cirrus target in our SNAPSHOT survey, we propose to obtain two CR-SPLIT exposures: 1000 s in F606W, and 1000 s in F814W. The total open shutter time, overhead for readout and filter changes, and guide star acquisition and re-acquisition will fit into one (1) orbit. The above exposure times are calculated using the parameters in the WFPC2 Instrument Handbook, version 2.0, and agree with estimates based on scaling archival Cycle 4 WFPC2 data from the ``Groth Strip''. The V surface brightness of a typical region of an optically bright cirrus cloud (such as the Lynds' Bright Nebula 1038+83) is about 23.0 mag arcsec^-2, which is comparable to the sky brightness. The number of electrons N collected in a WFC pixel in time t is: N=0.068 t, implying that the individual 500 s exposures will be object+sky noise limited. The two CR-SPLIT exposures per filter will facilitate cosmic ray removal. The CR-cleaned exposures will then be co-added to achieve a S/N=5 per WFC pixel in the F606W band. Stars will be subtracted by PSF-fitting and the images smoothed with a 3*3 pixel boxcar (0sec point3*0sec point3) in order to improve the S/N by a factor of 3 and to photometer regions of fainter surface brightness. Even though we propose to smooth the images a little, the full resolution of HST is crucial to this project, to enable adequate fitting and subtraction of the stars from the images before smoothing. Note, that the S/N per pixel will be much lower for PC pixels than for WFC; to compensate for this, we will arrange our pointing such that the brightest part of the nebula (V<22 mag arcsec^-2) will be imaged on the PC CCD. Further, the PC image will be smoothed 6*6 pixels (after star removal) to improve its sensitivity. The S/N will be comparable in the F606W and F814W exposures; the slight decrease in WFPC2 sensitivity from V to I is offset by the fact that cirrus tends to be brighter in I than in V. Even though the brightest stars (V~16) in the field will be saturated by a factor of 20 in the individual exposures, there is enough information in the PSF wings to recover their magnitudes to within 10\ the area of the image will be lost due to charge blooming. We request data in two bands because V-I colors are essential for identifying regions in which there is luminescence from hydrocarbon molecules. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. No coordinated observations or supporting HST observations are required. As described earlier, we have already gathered an extensive body of multi-color (UBVRI) optical images of a large number of high-latitude Galactic ``cirrus'' clouds. These CCD data were obtained over the last seven years using the Lowell 1 m, KPNO & CTIO Schmidt, and Steward 2.3 m telescopes. The ground-based data will be used for precise positioning of the WFPC2 in Phase II in order to: (1) place the brightest part of the nebula on the PC, and (2) to ensure that the WFPC2 field of view straggles a sharp edge in the cloud. In addition to existing IRAS 12, 25, 60, and 100 Mum data, we are obtaining high-resolution images at mid- to far-infrared wavelengths (5 Mum--200 Mum) of a subset of the 75 clouds with the ISO satellite. The ISO observations are being carried out in collaboration with Francois Boulanger (Orsay, France) and are part of an approved ISO key project to study cirrus. We are also proposing to obtain low dispersion Lick spectra of a few selected optically-bright cirrus clouds in order to better understand the nature of the excess red emission (at Lambda~6000Angstrom--9000Angstrom). In particular, we will compare the cirrus spectra to laboratory spectra of hydrogenated amorphous carbon particles and poly-aromatic hydrocarbon molecules.
