Abstract We propose to carry out a Snapshot survey of recent novae, to detect and measure their expanding gaseous shells. The survey will obtain narrow-band images in the light of HAlpha and other strong emission lines of 43 recent Galactic novae. This should more than double the number of known resolved nova shells, and provide insight into the hydrodynamics of common envelope evolution, by correlating the degree of the shells' ellipticities with the decay times of the novae. It will trace the distribution of hot and cool gas in the nova shells, and show their degree of inhomogeneity on both large and small scales. It will also help to find the distances to the novae, useful in modeling their accretion disks, and in providing an independent check of the extragalactic distance scale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7386( 6) - 01/04/99 09:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to take images through narrow-band filters of the fields of 43 recent Galactic novae. For the fainter targets, we will observe in HAlpha for 320 s. For the brighter targets, we will take shorter exposures through the F656N, F502N, and F658N filters, to observe in the light of the HAlpha, N II Lambda 6584 Angstrom, and O III Lambda 5007 Angstrom lines, all of which will be in strong emission. Since these are narrow-band filters, they will suffer in photometric accuracy when observing the broadened emission lines of an expanding nova shell, tending to suppress the center of the shell, where the highest line-of- sight velocities occur. This is not as serious as it might appear, however, since the often saturated star will render photometry in the center of the shell useless anyway. The primary aims of this project are detecting the shells and measuring their sizes and shapes, so photometric accuracy is of secondary importance. The PC chip has a 35 arcsec field of view, more than adequate to cover these nova shells. To measure b/a to within 10 percent, a diameter of at least 10 pixels is required. Experience with searching for faint targets against bright backgrounds indicates a S/N of 10 will guarantee completeness, and a S/N of 5 will detect about 50 percent. The best time to observe most nova shells is therefore between 3 and 9 -- 12 years since outburst. It however is not unreasonable to observe older nova shells, because nova shells are often observed to be strongly clumped (e.g., Slavin et al.), which may explain why some can still be seen after 100 years. Exposure times: Exposure times for each target will be selected so that the nova (the star in the center of the shell) reaches 90, 000 electrons in the central pixel of its image, or to integrate for a total of 600 s, whichever is shorter. This is to expose the nova shell (the nebulosity) as much as possible while avoiding blooming or saturation of pixels outside the central pixel, containing the nova (the star). It should in all cases produce a S/N approx 10 for the nebular shell surrounding the star, which should have many bright knots with spectra strongly in emission. Guiding mode: We will acquire guide stars and observe in Fine Lock for all targets. Proprietary data rights: Each image is likely to be of interest to the nova community, especially since many of these objects were studied spectroscopically near maximum (e.g., Williams, Phillips, & Hamuy 1994). It is also essential that any follow-up be done promptly---these are rapidly changing objects---and we therefore waive any proprietary data-rights period. Real Time Justification ----------------------- All narrow-band exposures of each target should be taken as close in time to each other as possible, although this is not critical.
