Abstract We propose to continue our survey of centers of nearby galaxies. The major goal for Cycle 7 is to survey an unbiased set of galaxies with a potentially wide range of black hole masses. The results will constrain the prevalence and formation of massive black holes and their relationship to AGN's. Over the last several years, we have used HST to characterize the scaling laws for galaxy centers, to identify an apparent dichotomy in galaxy types based on their central light profiles, and to identify new black hole candidates and confirm ground-based results on known candidates. In the STIS epoch, we wish to capitalize on the presence of a genuine slit spectrograph to study the central stellar dynamics of a large set of systematically selected elliptical and S0 galaxies. The sample for this cycle has been carefully chosen to optimize our leverage on the character of a proposed correlation of black hole mass with galaxy mass. In addition, high-S/N observations of line profiles should permit us to distinguish between BHs and anisotropic stellar orbits, a critical degeneracy that has long plagued this subject. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7388( 24) - 03/15/99 16:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The main body of observations consists of long-slit spectroscopy with STIS along the major axes of the galaxies listed in Table 1. Details of the proposed setups, including slitwidths and planned S/N ratios, are given there. In accordance with our S/N tests and other considerations discussed earlier, the Ca triplet region (8498, 8542, 8662 Angstrom) is strongly favored for detailed dynamics. The spectra will be taken with grating G750M. Essentially all spectra will be binned by 2 pixels in the dispersion direction to reduce read-out noise. The resulting velocity resolution (2 binned pixels) is 40kms. Proposed slitwidths are 0.1" and 0.2", yielding FWHM of 50 and 80kms, respectively. These instrumental resolutions are small compared to the expected central linewidths of >= 200kms. Exposure times have been tuned to achieve the listed S/N ratios in Table 1. Realistic estimates of all overheads, including object acquisition times, have been included. According to the Scientific Justification, at r = 0.1" we need to aim for a S/N of 50 in core galaxies, where the central losvd is likely to be of prime importance, and a S/N of >35 in power-law galaxies, where Sigma and rotation are more discriminatory. It proves possible to meet these requirements and retain small, high-resolution apertures and reasonable exposure times by selecting high-surface brightness galaxies. Slit widths have been narrowed to 0.1" whenever possible, consistent with a total exposure time of <10 orbits per galaxy. We include the important low-surface brightness core galaxy, NGC 4649, as a test case for studying future giant cores. Since current S/N estimates suggest that this galaxy requires 23 orbits at S/N = 50, we do not invest in more such objects this cycle before honing our techniques on this test object. At the listed exposure times, by binning along the slit, we can extract useful dispersions and radial velocities down to Mu_V = 16.5--17 mag arcsec^-2. This corresponds to radii of 1"--3", which allows overlap with ground-based data. We include a single-orbit H-Alpha$ exposure on NGC 4697 in hopes of detecting emission-line gas in the circular dust lane at a radius of ~1" (the center is unobscured). We also include 6 single-orbit, blue spectra with G430L to study central stellar populations, as described in the Scientific Justification. These will achieve S/N = 25 per Angstrom , which is adequate to measure the Lick line- strength indices for old stellar population ages and metallicities. We now consider some specific technical details: 1) Standard-star templates for dispersions and line -strengths: Two K2-K5 III standard stars are included. Within a single orbit we do two aperture maps, stepping the star in several positions across the 0.1" and 0.2" slits. These maps are essential for generating accurate model line profiles by taking into account the actual galaxy light distribution across the slit. We also squeeze in a single low-dispersion blue spectrum with grating G430L for calibrating Lick line-strengths. The inclusion of 2 standard stars is desirable because: 1) the Ca triplet region is affected by TiO absorption bands and a range in standard-star temperatures is needed to cover this; 2) STIS will be used often for studying the stellar kinematics of galaxies, for which a good standard-star library is important; 3) the suggested standards also have high- resolution ground echelle spectra that might be used to generate synthetic HST templates, a possibility that would reduce the need for future standard-star observations with STIS; and 4) both standards provide a zero-point calibration to the Lick line- strength system. The STIS team has also allocated several orbits for standard star calibration, and we will coordinate our final choice of stars with them. 2) Acquisition and peak-up procedure: Most of the proposed target galaxies have peaked central brightness distributions and should pose no problem for the standard STIS acquisition and peak-up procedures. However, the three core galaxies (NGC 4649, NGC 4291, and NGC 4473) have rather flat central profiles with light gradients of xxx initial acquisition phase, which uses a large aperture, but the outcome of the short-slit peak-up procedure is less clear. We will simulate the full acquisition process using the STIS team flight software and WFPC2 images prior to Phase II. 3) Flat-field quality: The maximum expected S/N from photon statistics will approach 100 per 2-px in the centers of some galaxies. To exploit these very high S/N ratios, excellent flat-fields will be required. Fringing due to non- repeatability of the grating tilt is the main cause of flat- field errors at 8500 Angstrom. We have verified with the STIS team that typical grating errors cause no visible fringes with the G750M grating, and that flat field errors will therefore be set by photon statistics, which is not a limitation with red flats. The adopted tilt of G750M for the Ca triplet is nominally a ``secondary tilt, " but this should not affect the quality of the flat-field or other calibration data (Green, private communication). 4) Cosmic rays, hot pixels, and RO noise: All single-orbit exposures will be CR- split. Many-orbit multiple exposures are automatically CR - split and should not be split further (to keep RO noise low). Prior to Phase II we will explore (with STIS members Green & Bower) via simulations whether exposures with only a few orbits should be CR-split. We will also explore whether modest dithering of the target along the slit might help to remove hot pixels. Since RO noise is significant at low surface brightness, we will bin virtually all spectra by 2 pixels along the wavelength direction, but there is little gain in S/N beyond this, and further binning would spread contamination by cosmic rays and hot pixels. 5) Red halos, wavelength stability: STIS CCD images beyond 7000 Angstrom are surrounded by low-level, large halos that extend to ~25 px (500kms) in radius and contain about 1 xxx may affect both losvd extraction and the modeling of light along the slit. However, the effect is stable, and extensive ground data exist to characterize it. A WAVECAL will also be taken every orbit, which should yield an absolute wavelength accuracy of ~3kms, more than adequate for our purposes. 6) Parallel observations: WFPC2 will be located at a distance of 6.5' along the minor axes of these galaxies, while NICMOS will be located at ~10' along PA = 45degrees. The STIS exposures typically last 6-10 orbits, with one up to 23 orbits, which affords the opportunity for fairly deep multicolor imaging of faint background galaxies and in the halos of the galaxies themselves. Experience has shown that two colors (V and I) for deep field exposures yield useful color and morphological information on distant galaxies and faint stars. The same color combination is ideal for halo globular clusters in the parent galaxies. We therefore split the available WFPC2 parallel time between F814W and F606W in the ratio 1:1, which yields good structural data in I combined with reasonable color information. A similar strategy will be used for NIC3, using roughly equal mixtures of F110W and F160W. In Phase II we will check all parallel fields for bright stars and make small pointing adjustments to the main galaxies (if possible) to exclude bright objects. *** we have substituted NIC2 for NIC3 because of the focus problem *** DOR: June 3, 1997. Real Time Justification ----------------------- No special requirements. All target galaxies have been observed with CCD spectrographs at Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory, using a 2.5 meter class telescope which produces subarcsecond seeing and is equipped with versatile spectrographs including the (Schechter) modular spectrograph, which is superb for Mg or Ca triplet dynamics. We obtained long slit spectra to 30" along the major and minor axis with S/N ~ 100 near 1".
