Abstract White dwarfs, the final evolutionary endpoints for most stars, are important to our understanding of stellar evolution and to our testing of critical aspects of fundamental physics. Stellar degeneracy, in particular, underlies much of our understanding of phenomena involving stellar evolution, neutron stars, and white dwarfs in more exotic binaries. However, our observational confirmation of Chandrasekhar's theory rests on four points, three representing the radii of white dwarfs in visual binaries with separations great enough to determine the white dwarf characteristics from the ground, and a fourth with a radius derived from previous HST observations. The results demonstrate that the theory of degeneracy barriers to gravitational collapse has been tested neither extensively or particularly successfully. We propose to increase the number of observed points from 4 to 6 by adding the binary white dwarf G107-70, and to greatly improve the error estimates of Procyon B, one of best known binary systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7398( 15) - 02/02/99 11:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our observations of G107-70 will be done with WFPC2 in image mode with the PC aperture. We will use a variety of wide band filters, including F336W, F439W, F555W, F675W AND F814W to adequately sample G107-70's energy distribution. We include the WFPC2 equivalent Johnson UBVRI filters. Our experience with Procyon B has shown that the UV region is particularly useful in obtaining an accurate temperature. Our Procyon B observations will be done with STIS, using the 52X0.1 slit, enabling us to sample both the white dwarf and the background flux from Procyon A. we will use the CCD detectors. We will cover Procyon B's entire spectrum using the low resolution gratings, then investigate regions of interest, such as the Balmer series, Mg II H & K, and the calcium line at 3933 A, with the medium resolution gratings. The low resolution observations are vital to obtain an accurate temperature for this object, while the medium resolution observations are critical to understanding Procyon B's composition, a limitation placed on our WFPC2 temperature of this object. The Procyon system is fascinatingly complex. Procyon A is unusual, in that it is an extremely strong EUVE and radio source. Our medium resolution observations are important steps toward understanding Procyon B's possible interaction in this system. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Procyon B (mv=10.92) is 4 arcsec from Procyon A (mv=1). Target acquisition with an offset star failed with FOS during Cycle 6, but did not tell us that it failed. Therefore we will use an early acquisition.
