Abstract We propose to observe the B III and B II resonance lines at 2065.8 and 1362.5 Angstroms, respectively, in a sample of main-sequence and slightly evolved blue stars using the HST STIS MAMA detectors and echelle gratings. The newest stellar evolution models that include rotation have significant differences for intermediate and massive stars that are vital for understanding the colour-magnitude diagrams of all young stellar systems, and, therefore, the evolution of galaxies, and these new models can be tested. Only they predict that light elements (Li, Be, B) are depleted on the main-sequence before significant nitrogen/helium enrichments occur. Boron is the only light element observable in B- stars, and only by the UV resonance lines. We wish to examine the relationship of boron with age and nitrogen abundance in 10- 15 solar mass stars on and near the main-sequence as a unique and important test of the new stellar evolution models. Boron can also be used to distinguish blue post- AGB stars from normal, metal-poor B-stars in the Galactic halo, since boron cannot survive in highly evolved objects. One high latitude star, PG 0832+676, has been identified as the most distant, normal, Galactic halo B-dwarf, but this interpretation has been questioned and has implications for understanding the young, early-type stars found far out in the Galactic halo. We propose to observe this star, which has vsini ~ 0 km/s, and hence also provides a unique template of the UV spectral lines in B-type stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7400( 3) - 05/14/97 11:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are requesting observations of the B III 2066 A line in a selection of young 10-15 solar mass stars. For the cooler A-supergiant, we are requesting observations of the B II 1362 A line. Since the B II and B III lines are blended with other spectral lines, resolution higher than the line widths due to rotational velocities is requested using either E230M or E230H for B III 2066 (also dependent upon exposure times and requirements for staying within the MAMA brightness limits) and E140H for B II 1362. The MAMA detectors are expected to yield S/N=30 regularly, which is sufficient to see the B III line even when the abundance has been depleted by a modest factor. For more reliable abundance determinations, we wish to improve the S/N by including slight wavelength offsets (or tilt changes) between otherwise identical, sequential exposures, which is expected to improve the flat-fielding and the final photon counting statistics. Six sharp-lined, bright, main-sequence B-type stars in clusters have been selected for the boron determinations. Nitrogen abundances in these stars have been determined (Gies & Lambert 1992 ApJ 387, 673) and indicate that some stars should have normal boron while others should be depleted (see Table below). One A-type supergiant has been included to examine the depletion of boron in a more highly evolved young star that has a normal nitrogen abundance. One high latitude B-type star which has been identified as both a normal B- dwarf and as a post-AGB star has also been included in the targets list since boron can be used as the definitive test of its true identity (one of the main-sequence B-stars, BD +56 576, is the ideal comparison star for PG0832+676 since it has very similar atmospheric parameters). None of these targets exceed the brightness limits for the MAMA detectors with a proper choice for the slit, although in many cases the only slit that can be used is 0.2x0.05ND (ND=2.0). Although this slit is unsupported, we do not anticipate requiring additional overheads since we are interested only in line profiles (furthermore, the STIS team suggests that standard flat-fielding should be sufficient and that the LSF for the 0.2x0.06 slit should be a sufficient representation). Exposure time estimates have been determined following the procedures outlined in the STIS manual to reach S/N=30 (global count rates calculated assuming 53 orders when using E230H, 43 orders with E230M, and 41 orders with E140H). STIS team members also suggested including the sample calculation results tabulated below (with the possibility of submitting IUE spectra during Phase II).
