Abstract We propose to improve with NICMOS the description of the orbits and spectral distributions of the very-low-mass components of the LHS 1070 triple system initiated during HST cycle 5 with the FOS. We also propose to obtain the same type of NICMOS observations for the optically well studied dM8 V star VB 10, to allow a differential study with this very similar single object. LHS 1070 can only be resolved from space and is one of only two systems comprising stars immediately at the hydrogen burning limit for which masses can be dynamically determined. WFPC2 photometry and FOS spectra acquired during HST cycle 5 revealed (1) absolute brightnesses corresponding to theoretical masses of 0.078--0.088 and 0.075- -0.085 Msun for the faint pair depending on their age and metallicity, and (2) a saturation of the optical TiO absorption bands. Additional near-infrared spectra are essential to a determination of their effective temperatures and metallicity. Accurate stellar parameters for the LHS 1070 system will provide a unique opportunity to better determine the poorly understood transition region between low mass stars and brown dwarfs, while yielding solid constraints for stellar models. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7415( 6) - 11/25/97 08:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Orbit 1 -- LHS 1070: Positioning should be no problem. The NICMOS Camera 3 has a wide field, and the coordinates are well enough known to fit the 11'' field of Camera 1 also (the size of the object is only 1.5'')., First we will determine the relative position and relative photometry of the components with Camera 1 by imaging. The pixel size of 0.043'' is well suited for the object. Measurements with filters F110M and F165M with a few seconds integration times are planned, for two different positions on the chip and in one off position. This will add up to 12 minutes (9 minutes acquisition and 3 minutes of measurements)., Then we will take grism spectra from 0.8-2.5 Mum. For the grism spectra the two narrow components will just be resolved (0.5'' with pixels of 0.2''). The pointspread function of component A will be used if deconvolution should become necessary. We plan to observe for all three grisms with the same procedure: On source/off source with the grism, twice with the integration time fitting the primary component, once with twice that integration time to emphasise the fainter companions. S/N ratios of ~ 100 will be reached formally. We will do the same type of measurement sequence also in narrow band filters to determine the actual location of the objects on the chip for each spectrum. The chosen filters are F113N, F166N and F215N. This will add up to the remaining 41 minutes (7 minutes camera change and 34 minutes of measuring). Orbit 2 -- VB 10: The imaging with camera 1 is not necessary. The spectra will be taken in the same way as for LHS 1070. In these calculations we have used the following time delays: -- setup or filter change 12 sec -- small angle offset 10 sec + 1 sec per arcsec -- readout with accum 9 sec per measurement (i.e. per read-reset -read) Integration times are 10 sec - 50 sec with the grism, 5-8 sec with the filters (K brightnesses of the components are 8.65, 9.85 and 10.2 mag; JHK fluxes are 270 mJy, 250 mJy, 215 mJy for component A, 50 mJy for component C). Real Time Justification ----------------------- The expected position angle of the pair B,C within LHS 1070 will be 30 +- 10 degrees for the second half of 1997. The grism spectra have to run perpendicular to this orientation otherwise the spectra of these components will overlap. The position angle and allowed tolerance have are given to our best present knowledge. They may have to be changed by a moderate amount (of the order of 10 degrees) based on our present reevalutation of previous orbital motion. A deviation of the orientation of the spectra from the nominal angle by 10 degrees certainly would not cause a problem. Calibration Justification ------------------------- The calibration information provided by the project should be sufficient for our proposal. Additional Comments ------------------- These are high proper motion stars. LHS 1070: fixed target information is copied from proposal 6050, where it was good enough to bring the object into the field-of-view of the FOS (e-mail by Denise Taylor from September 19, 1995, 8:50 EDT). Should be good enough to keep the object in the 11 arcsec field of camera 1. VB 10: coordinates are best effort, could be off by 10 arcsec. Does not appear to be a problem for the planned observations with camera 3, but could be for camera 1. No essential problem, preliminary scheduling can already be done.
