Abstract Due to their mass loss, the Mira-type variables o Ceti and R Leo are surrounded by expanding shells composed of gas and dust. Visibility measurements were obtained at 11 micron with the Infrared Spatial Interferometer of the University of California at Berkeley. They demonstrate that dust condenses at distances of about 0.06-0.07" from the center of these stars. Furthermore, near-infrared Adaptive Optics observations of o Ceti, carried out at the ESO 3.6 m telescope, show complex circumstellar structures detected up to 2 arcsecs. The angular resolution of the HST in the near-infrared is sufficient to resolve the dust formation zone of the two Miras. The HST is especially needed for its extraordinary huge dynamical range in the infrared compared to any ground based systems. It provides an unique way to improve significantly our knowledge of the distribution of circumstellar matter in the stellar proximities. For instance, the search for the most recent important events in the circumstellar matter as tracers of the mass loss history can be done. A fresh insight on the geometry of the mass loss phenomenon is expected too. Polarimetric measurements will bring complementary informations about the size of the scattering dust particles in the different structures of the envelope. This program has implications on the evolution of low and intermediate mass stars, the formation of dust, the enrichment of our Galaxy in processed elements, and the role of binarity in the mass loss processes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7416( 26) - 07/09/98 16:46 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image in the continuum the structures of the circumstellar matter of o Ceti and R Leo at a distance up to 2" from the star. A huge dynamic range in the resulting images is necessary for this purpose. In addition, polarimetric filters will be used for complementary informations concerning the typical size of scattering dust particles present in the structures of the envelope. The prototypical Miras o Ceti and R Leo can be well resolved with the HST because of their proximity to our Solar System. As a consequence they are very bright objects. Narrow filters are thus prefered for observing. Here is detailled the example of the exposure time calculation for o Ceti with filter F097N (Camera 1). At the maximum light of the Mira and at 0.9 micron of wavelengths the received flux is about 5000 Jy. Considering that the fraction of the energy falling on the central brightest pixel is equal to 0.22, the largest exposure time allowed for avoiding saturation is about 0.03 secondes. We plan first to observe in Bright Object Mode with exposure times equal to 0.01, 0.03 and 0.06 secondes. Then several exposures of increasing lengths (from 0.2 to 600 secondes) are planned in Multi Accum Mode. A huge dynamic range will be reached since low level intensity regions of the image will progressively get out the noise. Of course, brightest regions of the image will progressively saturate. According to the present knowledge of the STScI Help Desk, NICMOS detectors cannot be harmed in any way by overexposing. Our exposure lengths were adapted to get good data whatever the luminosity phases of the Miras are. The duration of observation in the present case is nearly 28 minutes in Bright Object Mode and nearly 13 minutes in Multi Accum Mode which gives a total duration of about 41 minutes. Considering the target acquisition or re-acquisition time and all the additional overhead times the observation of one target with one filter needs one orbit (visibility duration = 52 minutes both for o Ceti and R Leo). Furthermore, an important point has to be considered, it concerns the ghost image left by the saturation. The ghost image can be flushed away in about 10 minutes. Therefore, one orbit per object and per filter is needed. The ghost image left by the saturation (which cannot be avoided for getting the largest dynamic range) is cleared during the Earth occultation period, before the next visibility occurence. Background measurements are needed with polarimetric filters POL NG (Camera 2). The number of necessary orbits is larger in this case. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We would like the observations to be scheduled around minimum luminosity phase for the two Miras. The reason is that even with the shorter exposure time in Bright Object Mode, the Nicmos cameras are at the saturation limit. Observing R Leo at minimum phase will also provide the best conditions for detecting a possible companion. The mass loss activity of o Ceti and R Leo is regularly monitored by the Infrared Spatial Interferometer of the University of California at Berkeley. The interferometer is operating at Mont Wilson during summer time. The infrared visibility curve of o Ceti will be measured simultaneously. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Due to the wide dynamical range required for observing the dust shells, unresolved calibration sources need to be observed as part of our program. The calibrators are bright sources observed under the same conditions as our main targets. Moreover, we think that it is a good idea to use two calibrators, at least for o Ceti. Because of the dynamical range in the images we hope to cover, one of the calibrators may turn out to be a double star. This calibration was not requested in Phase I of the proposal. The scientific goal of our program is however respected. We wish to replace the polarization filters for R Leo by the filters F113N, F190N and F215N. The reason is that we do not want to use the same Nicmos camera twice during the same orbit because of the saturation/persistency problem (see additional comments). Additional Comments ------------------- It is essential for us not to use Nicmos 1 or Nicmos 2 twice during the same visibility period of one orbit. The reason for this is that the cameras will probably need more than thirty minutes to get ride of the persistency after saturation. We have built the structure of our orbits in order to take account of this restriction.
