Abstract HST/WFPC2 observations have shown that several young stellar objects in the nearby Taurus molecular clouds are seen only indirectly via scattered light. At optical wavelengths these systems show bipolar reflection nebulae separated by a central dark absorption lane obscuring direct view of the star. Within these bipolar nebulae the scattered light distribution is patchy and irregular, suggesting that the circumstellar envelopes inferred from the sources' infrared spectral energy distributions are responsible for the nebular morphology. We propose NICMOS observations of these systems in order to penetrate the overlying envelopes to obtain direct views of the young circumstellar disks believed to be associated with these sources. The new NICMOS images will be compared with the existing WFPC2 images and with model reflection nebulae to constrain the circumstellar density distributions. The dark absorption lanes already seen in these systems suggest that the NICMOS images will reveal edge-on disks similar to the HST results for HH 30, and thus allow direct observation of the disk geometry. Only HST can provide the linear resolution and dynamic range needed to reveal these disks at spatial scales relevant to the origin of the solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7418( 26) - 01/16/98 10:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Since we desire the highest possible spatial resolution combined with high sensitivity for low surface brightness nebulae, we will use NICMOS/NIC2 for imaging all the sources in the continuum. High dynamic range will be achieved by using the MULTIACCUM mode to obtain intermediate readouts in which the regions of the inner PSF are not saturated. We need imaging at several wavelengths in order to determine the extinction of the disk/envelope system. Thus, we have chosen the F110W, F160W, F187W and F205W filters for detailed mapping of the reflection nebulosity. Each object will have a nearby empty field selected for chopping to eliminate the thermal background in the F187W and F205W filters. The high inclination YSOs (DG Tau B, Haro 6-5B, and IRAS 04302+2247) have an average brightness of m_J = 14 and m_H = 12. Presuming that most of the measured intensity comes from a small nebula of size 3 arcsec^2, we find that in order to yield a S/N ~ 125 in the brightest part of the nebula will require exposures of 1000 s for F110W, 500 s for F160W, 660 s for F187W (object + background) and 300 s for F205W (object + background). This makes a total of ~ 2500 s or one orbit per object for continuum imaging of reflection nebulosity in NIR obscured sources. All of the remaining stars are probably directly visible at H band, so we have chosen to use the coronograph in addition to direct imaging. Lacking any NICMOS observations, we use the WFPC2 F814W observation of circumstellar nebulosity around the cTTS GM Auriga as a template of relative star/nebula brightness. In the GM Aur image, peak exposure of 23 million electrons on the star resulted in 2400 electrons on a single PC pixel for the circumstellar nebulosity at 0.8 "\\ in F814W after PSF subtraction. The resulting S/N was about 20. For an average star from our sample with m_J = 10.5, m_H = 9, and m_K = 7.5, this exposure level will be achieved in 260 s for F110W, 250 s for F160W, 600 s for F187W (object + background), and 200 s for F205W (object + background). Obtaining coronograph acquisition and repositioning will take about 100 seconds, leaving enough time to repeat the exposures with the object under the coronographic mask. This will give us reasonable S/N both on bright nebulosity near the star and faint nebulosity beyond the 0.4'' radius of the occulting spot. Thus, direct imaging + coronographic imaging of reflection nebulae in sources with NIR visible stars will take ~ 1 orbit/object. PV Cep fortuitously falls within HST's CVZ, so we expect to spend part of its long orbit on H_2 imaging. In a 1300 s exposure, we will be able to detect emission as faint as 5 * 10^-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 with a S/N = 10. At this wavelength, we will chop to a the background field for an equal length exposure. For PV Cep, total exposure time for NIC2 (+ the overheads for coronography) will be 5400 s or about 1 CVZ orbit. Note that we require actual or model PSF to subtract from the direct images of star + nebulosity. We are hopeful that a library of PSFs will be available in our suite of filters. Otherwise, we will generate model PSFs using the NICMOS GTO team "SIMIMAGE" program. In order to estimate exposure times for Fe II imaging of the jets in DG Tau B and Haro 6-5B, we have scaled from the known optical S II emission, which is produced by the same physics and in the same region as Fe II 1.644 Mum (Stapelfeldt et al. 1991). Comparison of the HH 34 jet emission in S II 6717 + 6731 Angstrom\\ (Jones and Cohen 1986) to Fe II 1.644 Mum. (Stapelfeldt et al. 1991) demonstrates that emission from these lines is very similar in intensity for YSO jets. Thus, we assume that the DG Tau B Fe II knot brightnesses will be of the same magnitude as the S II measured by Jones and Cohen (1986), ~ 10^-14 - 10^-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2. We find that these fluxes are too faint to be detected with NIC1, so we must use NIC3. In a 1300 s exposure with F164N on NIC3, we will detect Fe II two orders of magnitude fainter than the brightest presumed knot in DG Tau B with a S/N = 10. With an additional 1300 s exposure in F166N to obtain continuum for subtraction, we find that 2600 s in exposure time (or approximately 1 orbit) will be expended per object on each of our two emission line imaging targets. Our total request is thus 8 orbits (continuum imaging) + 2 orbits (Fe II imaging) for a total of 10 orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our target PV Cep is located within the CVZ during part of the year. We would like to use the additional CVZ time in the single orbit allocated for this object to obtain sensitive H_2 observations. We will be proposing observations with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array for the sources which currently lack high resolution maps of the circumstellar gas. These maps should clarify how the scattered light seen by HST is related to the distribution of dense molecular material. The first target will be IRAS04302+2247.
