Abstract The dSph satellite galaxies of the Milky Way provide the nearest, and best studied, examples of dark-matter dominated systems. They have stellar velocity dispersions well in excess of those consistent with their mass being predominantly in a stellar mass function at all like that of the solar neighborhood, or of the Galactic globular clusters. They are also sufficiently close that the new HST instruments can see directly very low mass stars in these galaxies. We propose deep imaging studies of the Ursa Minor dSph galaxy, to provide a direct test of the possibility that the stellar mass function is a function of environment, and that low mass luminous stars are relevant to an understanding of dark matter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7419( 10) - 01/22/99 11:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We require imaging data in the nonstandard STIS LP band, and the NICMOS H band, to provide a CMD to distinguish member stars in the target dSph galaxy from foreground Galactic stars. The numbers of fields needed is set by the number of stars required for statistically significant detection of a peak in the luminosity function. NICMOS camera 3 FOV is about 0.7 sq arcmin, and STIS LP FOV is 0.39 sq. arcmin. We require sufficient stars to provide a 5-sigma detection, against background. For UMi, the HDF star counts (eg Elson, Gilmore & Santiago 1996 New Astronomy 1, 1) suggest the point source background of red sources will be small. From the extant WFPC2 data for UMi, we determine the density of stars is 34 stars per WFC frame per 0.2 mag interval at V=24. Normalising to the observed density and using the predictions of stellar evolutionary models (see Figure 2), we estimate 1 NICMOS field and 2 STIS fields are needed to provide clear discrimination between a standard (x~ 1. 3) and a steep IMF. Since we are attempting to derive luminosity functions for comparison with those determined in standard HST VI filters, empirical calibrations are required. We will thus proceed by exploiting the smaller distance moduli of Galactic globular clusters of the same metallicity, and similar ages, to carry out a purely empirical differential comparison. WFPC2 VI data for globulars exist extending to the same mass range as we will achieve here. By observing with STIS LP and NICMOS F160W exactly the same stars as have been observed with WFPC2 VI, we will establish an empirical calibration of our passbands which is exactly relevant to our data. Since the cluster luminosity functions, fully allowing for mass segregation, are now well determined, a robust differential comparison of the luminosity functions in the Galactic globular clusters and the dSph galaxies will result. Recall that a comparison of the globular cluster luminosity functions with those of the open c lu sters, the field halo, and the field disk, is already available ( von Hippel Etal 1996). The ideal clusters are 47Tuc (Fe/H =- 0.75), and M15 (Fe/H =- 2.2), for comparison with UMi (Fe/H =-2). We require one orbit in total with STIS and NICMOS on each of these clusters. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Note that since the UMi field is in the CVZ these observations could be carried out with high efficiency.
