Abstract Previous WFPC2 observations of the gravitational lens system Cl0024+16 in which a faint blue galaxy is multipli-imaged by a foreground rich galaxy cluster have allowed the reconstruction of the source. It displays a spectacular ring like morphology with several bright knots and a dark center that strongly suggests vigorous star formation and rapid evolution. This proposal requests NICMOS H, J and K band images of the three brightest and most magnified of these arcs. These data will be used to reconstruct, by the same inverse lensing processing, the source's appearance at NIR wavelengths. The gravitational lensing boost provides us with more than 10 times more total flux and up to about ten times better spatial resolution than would otherwise be available for a typical member of the faint blue galaxy population. The resulting 3 band (2 color) NIR source image, in combination with WFPC2 data obtained previously (see figures), will allow us to (1) search for any old stellar population in this apparently young and rapidly evolving object, (2) characterize the luminosity, color and morphology of any such old component of the galaxy, and (3) test the hypothesis that some regions of the source galaxy are heavily obscured by dust. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7425( 6) - 11/11/97 17:19 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Two orbits of HST time will be devoted to each of the three brightest arcs in the Cl0024+16 system. The usable time in one orbit on each arc, after overheads, will be divided into equal exposures with NICMOS Camera 1 plus the F110W filter (called ``J" above) and with NICMOS Camera 1 plus the F160W filter (called ``H" above). The other orbit per arc will be used for Camera 2 plus filter F205W (called ``K" above) exposures. The resulting signal-to-noise in each band is sufficient to detect the old stellar population expected for a galaxy significantly below L^* in luminosity out to redshifts z >~ 1. Thus, a total of 6 orbits is requested. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. None. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Search for target duplications will probably reveal some overlap between the exposures specified in this proposal and the GTO program NC24. Note however that the science goals of the two projects are rather different as are the observing programs in detail. In particular, NC24 is primarily aimed at study of high redshift cluster galaxies and their evolution. For this reason (presumably), its observing program uses NICMOS to systematically assemble a mosaic image of the whole cluster and its immediate surrondings. By contrast, this GO project (7425) is focused entirely on the study of the strongly lensed background galaxy and devotes all of its time to imaging the three brightest arcs produced by the strong lensing event with the highest available spatial resolution. Also, this project seeks to obtain K band images which are not included at all in the NC24 project. Perhaps most importantly, while NC24's abstract mentions infrared morphology of background lensed galaxies in passing, there is no indication that a detailed restoration (by "reverse lensing" through models of the cluster plus galaxies potential well) of the unlensed source image is contemplated.
