Abstract We propose to image Uranus in 27 filters between 220 and 2100 nm wavelength. The wide wavelength range allows determination of aerosol sizes and spectral characteristics superior to previous work. Some of the filters are in methane absorption bands with methane absorption coefficients spanning a factor of 1000, which probe very different altitude layers in Uranus' atmosphere. HST's spatial resolution gives accurate canter-to -limb information for each latitude band, which strongly constrains models of Uranus' vertical haze structure. Our analyzed images of Uranus of Cycle 5 show high albedo contrasts in latitude, but the wavelength coverage of these images was not sufficient. These observations yielded unexpected results on the photometric properties of Uranian rings and satellites. Open questions about the phase function of these objects near zero degree and about their spectral characteristics over an expanded wavelength region can be answered by the proposed observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7429( 10) - 07/08/97 10:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ WFPC2: We propose to image Uranus in a set of 21 filters. Filter names and suggested exposure times in seconds are: F218W (160), F255W (160,400), F300W (160), F336W (2x160), F380W (40), F439W (35), F467M (60), F547M (10), F588N (80), F631N (2x100), F658 (160), F673N (160), F791W (26), F785LP (80,160), F850LP (4x160), F953N (160,400), F1042M (160), FQCH4N-A (40), FQCH4N-B (160,400), FQCH4N-C (160), FQCH4N-D (160,400). All exposures are on PC1 with the exception of the two methane filters only available with the WF Camera, and filters F218W and F1042M. Total exposure time is 82 minutes. Overhead time is 82 minutes. With 41 minutes available per orbit aside from aquisition, four orbits are required. We request a phase-angle distribution of the four orbits of 0.03, 0.2, 1, and 3 degrees. We request a timing of these orbits to allow imaging of all or all but one of the uranian satellites on PC1. NICMOS: We propose to image Uranus in six filters. Filter names and suggested exposure times in seconds are: F108N (2x240), F165M (2x120), F160W (2x120), F171M (2x240), F187W (2x120), F204M (2x240). The first two filters are with Camera 1, the other four filters with Camera 2. With each filter, Uranus is imaged twice at different positions on the chip. Additional parallel exposures provide the thermal background (sky) once or twice for each filter. Primary exposure time is 36 minutes. Overhead is 5 minutes aside from aquisition. This requires one orbit. Our 27 filters have been chosen to sample several methane band and continuum wavelengths. Most filters will yield 20-40,000 electrons/pixel for the brightest features. Uranus has never been imaged at high spatial resolution at wavelengths of the NICMOS camera. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We request to schedule the four orbits of the WFPC2 observations when Uranus is near phase angle 0.03, 0.2, 1, and 3 degrees, respectively, in order to optimally sample the opposition surge of the satellites and rings. We request a timing of these orbits to allow imaging of all or all but one of the uranian satellites on PC1. In cases where Oberon does not fit on PC1, it should be imaged on WF2-4 where it only saturates in some of the filters. These requests may be weakened in case of scheduling conflicts. We prefer the orbit of NICMOS images close to one of the WFPC2 observations, but this is not necessary.
