Abstract HST has opened an invaluable window on the high-redhsift universe by providing kiloparsec resolution of distant galaxies. However, since the rest-frame wavelengths of galaxies move further into the UV at increasingly higher redshifts, evolutionary effects are diluted by insufficiently well determined k-corrections. Thus a library of UV images of normal galaxies at low redshifts is essential to our understanding of the properties and evolution of the high redshift universe. Using STIS as a camera (fuv-mama detector, F25SrF2 filter), we will compile such a library by observing 50 galaxies at low-redshift (Zirbel 1993). This gallery of images will be unique in its faithful representation of galaxies in the field, and in the high quality of the data: high spatial resolution (0.2"), isolation of the far-UV flux with negligible visible/red light leak, and excellent photometric characteristics (linear, pulse -counting detector). We will analyze these images to determine the UV properties of galaxies at the present epoch. We will use this information in conjunction with STIS CCD images to test current scenarios of galaxy evolution and to interpret deep optical surveys such as the Hubble Deep Field. We will also obtain H-band images with NICMOS as coordinated parallels. These images will be used to search for dwarf galaxies in the program fields. (The galaxy groups are thought to be large enough that NICMOS will be viewing the same galaxy group as STIS.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7432( 8) - 12/22/98 12:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will image each sub-group of 2-3 galaxies in one of Zirbel's galaxy groups using both the Far-UV MAMA detector with the F25SRF2 filter blocking geocoronal emission, and the STIS CCD camera with F28X50LP optical longpass filter. We plan to spend two orbits per field (typically 110 min), with most of the observing time allotted to getting the far-UV picture, and only about 15 minutes for the "optical" picture. The S/N of the two pictures should be sufficient to classify the morphological type of the galaxies in the field. After guide-star acquisition, the STIS FUV exposures will start and extend into the next orbit. The optical picture will be taken near the end of the second orbit. To estimate the expected count-rates for the UV images, we assume that the ``brightest'' regions of elliptical (the nucleus) and spiral galaxies (knot in spiral arm) have far-UV surface brightnesses on the order of 1* 10^- 16 erg/s/cm^2/Angstrom/arcs^2, as found by UIT. While this surface brightness is well above the sky (STIS Handbook, Table 6.4) and detector background, it is still quite faint, and the corresponding count-rate is low: 0.00139 c/s/pix. We will therefore bin the data to produce 102x102-pixel images having 0arcs25 super-pixels. We expect to get up to 680 counts per super-pix in the 81-minute total exposure time. At more typical surface brightnesses, the counts could be an order of magnitude lower. One STIS/CCD image will be taken of a Zirbel galaxy group, so in those cases where 2 different fields in the same group are imaged with STIS/FARUV-MAMA, no 2nd CDD picture will be taken; the STIS exposures will be extended to 2 full orbits.
