Abstract We are working to calculate a highly accurate library of UV stellar spectra that can be used to estimate the age and metallicity of galaxies of intermediate age (between 1 and 8 Gyrs). The critical step in this effort is to test the model spectra against high-quality UV spectra of real stars. Only by verifying the models in this way can we have confidence in the synthetic spectra, especially those for the very high metallicity found in the cores of elliptical galaxies. We therefore propose to obtain STIS/E230M spectra of 16 late-A and F-type stars for this purpose. We will then use our library of UV spectra in conjunction with current evolutionary models to explore the effects of age, metallicity, non-solar abundance ratios, and IMF on the rest-frame UV spectrum of a galaxy. Our goal is to break the age-metallicity degeneracy that stymies present methods of dating galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7433( 5) - 07/22/97 09:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Ideally, we would observe all possible kinds of stars -- A stars, F stars, HB stars, AGB-manque stars, etc. -- over the full E230M spectra spanning the range from 1650 to 3200 Angstrom. However, we can get the greatest gains for the least number of orbits if we stick to observing stars near the MS turnoff (late -A and F stars). If we confine our targets to stars near the MS turnoff, then we can limit the observations to a single grating setting (E230M/Wc=2700), since these stars have very little flux below 2300 Angstrom. Program Stars. The program stars must already have well determined properties so that we can check that the stellar properties derived from the UV spectrum match the optical properties. We have therefore selected stars from Edvardsson et al.(EAG). This group has nicely sampled the temperature/metallicity domain and has done very careful analysis. We would like to sample stars near the MS turnoff every 200 degrees and at low, solar, and high metallicities. EAG stars hotter than 6500 are too bright to observe with E230M. We have therefore selected two stars, hd23754 and hd 128167 from the EAG sample to observe at E230H. Observing Program. Since well studied stars also tend to be bright stars, we must be careful to observe the bright-object restrictions. We first made detailed calculations of the expected count-rates (per pixel and global c/s) for each of the program stars. To be conservative, we assumed a low metallicity (log Z=- 0.5), which leads to an enhanced UV flux due to decreased line blocking. We find that most stars in the Edvardsson sample stay within the BOP restrictions if observed with E230M/Wc=2700 A. However, stars hotter than 6500 K are too bright in the UV, so we will observe them with E230H, which requires 3 grating settings to sample the spectral range covered by E230M.
