Abstract Recent observations with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) have provided a complete sample of the hot post asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) population in fourteen globular clusters. We have begun a program of optical and IUE spectroscopy to determine the fundamental stellar parameters (\log L, T_ eff, \log g) of these stars, but further progress requires HST ultraviolet spectroscopy of the hottest (T_ eff > 30,000 K) four post-AGB candidates, and HST ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy of three candidates in the crowded cluster cores. The determination of the fundamental stellar parameters of a complete sample of hot post-AGB stars will allow the first observational test of theoretical post-AGB lifetimes across the HR diagram. In addition, we will obtain a sensitive diagnostic for the masses of the currently forming white dwarfs in globular clusters by application of the core mass - luminosity relation for post-AGB stars. Our results will have important implications for models of the UV flux of old stellar populations, and for the use of cluster white dwarf standard candles to derive globular cluster distances (and ages). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7436( 12) - 04/14/98 10:43 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For all our hot post-AGB candidates, we will obtain long-slit (52x0.2) low- dispersion UV spectroscopy using the G140L and G230L modes to cover the entire range between 1150 Angstroms and 3100 Angstroms. The 1600 Angstrom flux of all eight targets has been directly measured on the UIT images and ranges from 10^- 14 erg s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 for the faintest target (NGC104-UIT14) to 10^-13 erg s^ -1 cm^-2 AA^-1 for the brightest targets (in NGC 6723). We will obtain G430L CCD spectroscopy for four post-AGB candidates near the cluster cores. We requested sufficient exposure time to obtain a S/N > 25 per resolution element over most of the wavelength range in the UV modes, and S/N > 30 for the G430L spectra. For example, for NGC1904-UIT1 (V=18.6) we estimate exposure times of 1400s (G140L), 1100s (G230L), and 1240s (G430L) and thus require 2 orbits. We are able to find offset stars and measure coordinates and fluxes off of archival WFPC2 for three of the four targets (NGC6752-UIT1, NGC1904-F1179, and NGC2808-UIT1) near the dense cluster cores. For the fourth core target NGC104- UIT14 we are requesting early acquisition WFPC2 images in the F555W, F439W, and F218W filters. For the long exposures in NGC2808=UIT1 and 47TUC-UIT14, we will observe the stars at two positions along the long slit (PATTERN=ALONG-SLIT) to minimize fixed pattern noise. Exposure times for the G430L observations were estimated by assuming a hot stellar spectrum, normalized to the UIT 1620 Angstrom flux. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Three of our targets (NGC6752-UIT1, NGC6752-B2004, and NGC2808-UIT1) have excellent CVZ visibilities, and we wish to take advantage of CVZ scheduling for maximum observing efficiency.
