Abstract The prominent far-UV upturn (``UVX'') in the spectra of elliptical galaxies originates from stars in their old populations which have evolved beyond the He- flash at the tip of the red giant branch. Differences between galaxies and strong gradients within galaxies demonstrate that the UVX is extraordinarily sensitive to the characteristics of its parent population---far more so than are optical/IR photometric or spectroscopic indices. STIS offers a new and unique capability for obtaining long-slit, spatially-resolved far-UV spectra of galaxies. We propose to exploit this by taking long-slit spectra of six galaxies to investigate correlations between the local properties of the UVX (temperature and amplitude) and those of the background population at the same location. The results will be of considerable importance in narrowing the list of possible mechanisms for the UVX. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7438( 9) - 02/18/99 10:45 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will take long-slit G140L (1150-1700 A, far-UV MAMA) and G430L (3050--5500 A, optical-band CCD) STIS spectra of our targets with the nucleus of the galaxy centered in the slit. We have used the STIS Exposure Time Calculator to plan the program. UV exposure time estimates for most of our sample are based on Astro/UIT photometry of the 1500 A flux as a function of position within the galaxies. A typical source has a monochromatic 1500 A surface brightness of 20 mag/arcsec^2 or 3.6E--17 erg/(sec cm^2 A arcsec^2) at a radius of 5". Central surface brightnesses at HST resolution, from our existing FOS spectroscopy or estimated from HST V-band imaging and mean UV--V colors can be up to 3 mags (16x) brighter. All of the sources are very far from the STIS bright object limit for spectroscopy. Because of the low surface brightnesses, most of our observations will be dark-count limited. Our S/N estimates are based on the nominal far-UV MAMA dark-count specification. However, lab testing indicates that the actual dark rate will be significantly lower, implying that the S/N's in practice should be better than stated here. The far-UV spectra will cover the range 1150--1700 A Meaningful measures of radial changes in the amplitude and temperature of the UVX component require S/N > 30 per spectral resolution element. In order to achieve that within a reasonable number of orbits for most of our targets we find that we must use the 25" x 2" slit. This implies 48 A spectral resolution, which is not ideal but is suitable for our purposes. On a typical source, by averaging over 2" in the spatial direction (or folding the spectrum across the nucleus and averaging the two 1" regions at a given radius), we will be able to achieve S/N ~ 30-80 in 48 A bands over most of the area within the slit after 8000 seconds of integration in G140L. This will yield 12 independent spectra in the spatial direction, which is a great improvement in spatial resolution over existing data. Because the UVX is relatively hot, S/N will be higher for shorter wavelengths. In the central 2" of the galaxies, we can achieve similar S/N with 12 A resolution using the 25" x 0.5" slit, which will permit measures of emission lines and stronger absorption features if any are present (cf. Brown et al. 1995). Optical band STIS CCD exposure times are based on HST broad-band surface photometry. Using the 52" x 0.2" slit, we will obtain spectra with S/N > 50 in 10.8 A bands for 1" spatial elements over the region in common with the UV spectra in 2000 seconds of integration time. Given the difference in slit sizes, the optical and UV spatial sampling will not be entirely well matched; but actual experience with the spectra will be necessary to decide whether this has any practical significance. A typical visit to a target then would involve 5 orbits: 4 for acquisition and far-UV spectroscopy and 1 for the optical spectroscopy. For some targets we plan an additional 4 orbits for far-UV spectra of the nuclear regions with the narrower slit (25" x 0.5"). In one case (N3115) we will use two different slit orientations (minor and major axis) and will add a narrow slit UV spectrum along the major axis, making a total of 14 orbits. The galaxy cores are bright and concentrated in white light. We expect no particular difficulties with STIS acquisition, It would be important to obtain matching mid-UV (2000-3000 Angstrom) long-slit spectra in order to completely characterize the background population. However, our understanding of this spectral domain in E galaxies is less secure than for the optical region, which must be our main standard against which to compare the UVX. Furthermore, with the mid-UV G230L or G230LB grating configurations, we find that it is hard to obtain the appropriate spectral resolution (~ 10 A) and S/N within the scope of this proposal. For some of our sources, mid-UV FOS spectra of the cores will be available from an ongoing Cycle 6 program (# 6585). Depending on the outcome of the UVX-optical correlations from this Cycle 7 proposal, a mid-UV proposal may be desirable in later cycles.
