PI: Michael Brown California Institute of Technology CoI: Shri Kulkarni California Institute of Technology N CoI: Chris Koresko California Institute of Technology N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract Dust particles around a main sequence star are quickly removed by Poynting-Robertson drag, therefore the existence of such dust is an almost certain signature of a current presence of a population of larger bodies in orbit around the star. Around the sun, dust appears to be confined to the inner solar system, where a belt of zodiacal dust is replenished by collisions between asteroids and the outgassing of comets. Observations of dust in the inner regions of nearby stellar systems would allow us to infer the presence of such bodies and possibly a planetary system around those stars. Little is currently known about dust within about 5 AU of main sequence stars: observations of IRAS excess emissions and groundbased coronographic observations of scattered light from dust are both sensitive chiefly to dust much further from the central star. We therefore propose a NICMOS coronographic survey of bright nearby stars in order to begin to characterize the zodiacal dust environments in nearby main sequence stars. This survey should be sensitive to optical depths of dust an order of magnitude greater than that known to exist around the sun, providing the first good limits on these dust populations and the small orbiting bodies from which they come. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7441( 16) - 09/15/98 11:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain deep NICMOS coronographic images with the F110W filter to search for zodiacal dust and brown dwarfs around nearby stars. Each target will be observed for one orbit, and the telescope will be rolled +/- 15 degrees halfway through the orbit to allow better subtraction of the HST/NICMOS PSF. To avoid saturation in all but the regions closest to the coronograph for the brightest stars, we will use the ACCUM mode with an integration times of 12.6 seconds and take repeated observations (~ 100) over the course of the orbit. With the overheads due to two guide star acquisitions (9+9 minutes), telescope rolling (2 minutes), coronograph centering (98+98 sec), and instrument setup (12 sec) and readout (6.7 sec/exposure, or a total of 11 minutes), we expect approximately 20 minutes on-target per orbit. In Table 1 we show possible SN for zodiacal dust in a sample of our target stars. For these calculations, we have assumed the following: the scattering efficiency of the dust grains is ~0.1 at 1.1Mu, appropriate for 0.1Mu spherical silicate grains (Evans, 1993); the optical depth of the dust is either that calculated from IRAS infrared excess measurements of outer-solar-system dust (Backman and Gillett 1987) or is assumed to be 10^-6, about an order of magnitude below the IRAS lower limit for distant dust and about an order of magnitude above the known optical depth of dust in our solar system (Backman and Gillett 1987); and the zodiacal dust is in a uniform annulus viewed at a 30 degree inclination. The surface brightness of the wings of the stellar PSF are calculated using the plot of encircled energy from the NICMOS handbook and assuming that the coronograph depresses the wings by a factor of 10. The S/N given is the ratio of the expected signal to the noise in the stellar PSF background (which is many times higher than sky background or readout noise). Value are given for annuli extending from 2 to 3 AU and from 5 to 6 AU. Extra-solar zodiacal dust will be detectable to an optical depth of almost as low as 10^-6, only an order of magnitude higher than the known amount of dust around the sun, and lower than the optical depth of outer-solar-system dust in IRAS excess stars. These observations will therefore provide the first good constraints to our understanding of extra-solar zodiacal dust. begintabular| l r r r | & Sirius & Tau Ceti & 61 Cyg A , stellar brightness (Jy) & 6200 & 240 & 120 , Tau dust & 10^-6 & 1.5 * 10^-5 & 1.5* 10^- 4, total dust brightness (mJy) & 0.4 & 0.3 & 1.2 , surface brightness (mJy/arcsec^2) & 0.3 & 0.5 & 1.9 , dust counts/pixel, 20 min & 7.7* 10^3 & 1.1* 10^4 & 2.8 * 10^4 , stellar brightness @ 3AU & 27900 & 2880 & 1440 , stellar brightness @ 6AU & 68 & 48 & 24 , (mJy/arcsec^2) & & & , background counts/pixel, 3AU & 3.3* 10^8* & 3.4* 10^7* & 1.7 * 10^7 , background counts/pixel, 6AU & 7.7 * 10^5 & 5.7 * 10^5 & 2.9 * 10^5 , SN/pixel, 3AU & 0.2 & 1.0 & 3.5 , SN/pixel, 6AU & 3.0 & 5.1 & 18 , SN/ 0.3 arcsec^2 box, 3AU & 0.9 & 3.9 & 14 , SN/ 0.3 arcsec^2 box, 6AU & 12 & 20 & 74 , endtabular ^* Saturated in a 12 second exposure. Half of our targets will saturate at 3 AU in these 12 second exposures; this problem is alleviated by taking 2 second exposures. Because of the increased overhead the SN is then reduced by 40 for each target. Real Time Justification ----------------------- All targets must be scheduled with guide stars available at both roll positions. These observations complement our 10 and 20Mu Keck survey of these stars currently underway. The Keck observations are sensitive to thermal emissions from cool dust further from the star (but closer than the IRAS or ISO observations), while the HST observations will be sensitive to scattered light from dust within 3AU of the star. The combination of the two will allow us to begin to characterize the dust environments of our neighboring stellar systems. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- 1) Program requires a 15 degree roll in mid-orbit, but RPS2 currently doesn't allow that to be specified. The two separate roll angles now appear as two separate orbits, so the program appears to take 8 orbits instead of the 16 allocated. 2) Early acquisitions are specified for 4 targets because they are too bright to acquire in ACQ mode without saturating. HOWEVER, use of BRIGHTOBJ mode would alleviate this early acquisition and prevent 50% of the orbits from being wasted on non-science observations. 3) Because of the lack of availability of BRIGHTOBJ mode during ACQuisitions, 4 of 8 targets have had to be dropped. If BRIGHTOBJ mode were available, we would retarget eta Cas, del Pav, 61 Cyg A, and 61 Cyg B, as originally proposed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7441( 16) - 09/15/98 11:52 - [ 3] Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7441( 16) - 09/15/98 11:52 - [ 4] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 SIRIUS STAR, A0-A3 V-IV RA=6H 45M 4.9S +/- .1", DEC=-16D 1998.5 V = -1.43+/-0.5 42' 49" +/- .1" 2 ALTAIR STAR, A4-A9 V-IV RA=19H 48M 20.589S +/- .1", B1950 V = 0.77+/-0.1 DEC=8D 51' 46.63" +/- .1" Epoch of Position RA proper motion (seconds of time/yr) DEC Proper Motion (arcsec/yr) Annual Parallax (arcsec) 1950 0.0363 0.387 0.194 3 TAU-CET STAR, G V-IV RA=0H 41M 44.659S +/- .1", DEC=- B1950 V = 3.49+/-0.1 16D 12' .48" +/- .1" Epoch of Position RA proper motion (seconds of time/yr) DEC Proper Motion (arcsec/yr) Annual Parallax (arcsec) 1950 -0.1193 0.858 0.275 4 PROCYON STAR, F3-F9 RA=7H 36M 41.117S +/- .1", B1950 V = 0.38+/-0.1 DEC=5D 21' 16.80" +/- .1" Epoch of Position RA proper motion (seconds of time/yr) DEC Proper Motion (arcsec/yr) Annual Parallax (arcsec) 1950 -0.0476 -1.029 0.283 5 ALTAIR-2 STAR, A4-A9 V-IV RA=19H 50M 42.6S +/- .1", DEC=8D 1998.5 V = 0.77+/-0.1 51' 51" +/- .1" Comments: Corrected coordinates for Altair. 6 PROCYON-2 STAR, F3-F9 RA=7H 39M 13.3S +/- .1", DEC=5D 1998.5 V = 0.38+/-0.1 13' 44" +/- .1" Comments: Corrected coordinates for Procyon. 7441( 16) - 09/15/98 11:52 - [ 5] Visit: 10 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Early acquisition for visit 12.
