Abstract The HST has contributed and will continue to contribute towards advancing our understanding of the host galaxies of low-redshift quasars. However, it is with the advent of NICMOS that the full potential of HST should be realized, making it possible to tackle the previously intractable problem of the cosmological evolution of quasar hosts. Here we propose to build on our Cycle 6 WFPC2 observations of quasar hosts at z ~eq 0.2 and to mount an extensive WFPC2+NICMOS imaging investigation of the cosmological evolution of the hosts of both radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars from z ~eq 2 to the present day. This will be the first such study ever undertaken with a realistic prospect of success. By careful choice of filters, and careful quasar sample selection we have ensured that i) we will sample the same spectral region at all redshifts ii) our images will consist purely of starlight, uncontaminated by emission lines, and iii) our results will not be biased by quasar luminosity correlating with redshift. This definitive study will thus, for the first time, allow us to determine the cosmological evolution of the luminosity, scalelength, and degree of morphological disturbance in quasar hosts. As we explain, such information holds the key to solving several key questions about quasar activity, in particular the physical origin of the dramatic evolution of the quasar luminosity function. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7447( 9) - 01/21/00 14:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Predicted fluxes from quasar nuclei and host galaxies: On average the light from a quasar nucleus has a flat spectral energy distribution (f_Nu ~eq const) from the ultraviolet to red wavelengths, and thus is expected to have the following colours at any redshift: V-I = 0.49, V-J = 0.81 and V-H = 1.39. This allows us to use the measured V magnitudes of our quasar targets to predict the typical flux densities which will be contributed by the unresolved nucleus in the appropriate filter for each redshift bin, particularly since for z > 0.4 the V filter samples the spectrum of the source shortward of the 4000-Angstrom break in the host's spectrum ( i.e. we can reasonably assume that the contribution of the host galaxy to the observed V magnitude of our quasar targets is very small). Thus, we have, for example: at z ~eq 0.9 V_qso ~eq 19.5 = J ~eq 18.7 = 50MuJy; and at z ~eq 2.9 V_qso ~eq 20.4 = H ~eq 19.0 = 25 MuJy. Obviously the luminosity of the host galaxies is one of the quantities we are aiming to measure, but for the purpose of estimating integration times we adopt the useful and testable null hypothesis that the magnitudes and colours of the quasar hosts will be comparable to those of radio galaxies at the same redshift (which at least at z ~eq 0.2 appear to have comparable luminosities, colours and scalelengths; Taylor et al. 1996). Thus, we have, for example: at z ~eq 0.9 K_rg ~eq 17.0 & J-K ~eq 1.7 which gives J ~eq 18.7 = 50MuJy; and at z ~eq 2.0 K_rg ~eq 18.3 & H-K ~eq 0.7 which gives H ~eq 19.0 = 25MuJy. Thus under this null hypothesis the flux densities expected from the nucleus and from the host should be comparable at all redshifts. In the light of these figures, to assess the feasibility of this project we have simulated the expected luminosity profiles of quasar host galaxies in each of our four redshift bins. In addition, to assess our ability to determine the scalelength of the host galaxy, at each redshift we have constructed two alternative de-Vaucouleurs laws, one with r_e ~eq 5kpc, and one with r_e ~eq 30kpc (effectively spanning the range in half-light radii displayed by the hosts in our z ~eq 0.2 sample) both normalized to the same total flux density (as derived above). We have been able to demonstrate that the host galaxy should be clearly detectable at radii >0.25 arcsec and can be followed out r ~eq 1 arcsec after binning the data in a circular annulus. In both of our chosen NICMOS filters, our calculations (confirmed by running the simulators) indicate that 1 orbit should yield 0.2Sigma per 0.043 arcsec pixel for a surface brightness of 1MuJy arcsec^-2. This is equivalent to a surface brightness of 1.6 * 10^-3 MuJy per pixel implying a 1Sigma detection level per pixel at a flux density of 0.008MuJy per pixel. However at r = 1 arcsec there are ~eq 150 0.043-arcsec pixels in a circular annulus, and so by azimuthal averaging the S/N ratio can be increased by a factor of 12. This implies that in 1 orbit a 3Sigma detection of the azimuthally averaged luminosity profile should be possible down to the 0.002MuJy per pixel level that is indicated by the horizontal dotted line in Figure 2. Figure 2 also demonstrates that the field of view of Camera 1 will be more than adequate for our purposes, and so we propose to use Camera 1 for our F110M, and F165M observations. We propose to use WFPC2 for our F814W observations of the z ~eq 0.4 quasars. Observing Procedure: For our z=0.4 sample we will be using the F814W filter on WFPC2. We are adopting the same observing strategy as that used in our Cycle 6 program for quasars at z=0.2: two short (5 and ~40 seconds) exposures to provide an unsaturated quasar image for scaling the PSF followed by three long (600 seconds) exposures. An orbit will be given over to dithered observations of a v=12.7 star to provide a PSF with very high dynamic range. For the z=0.9 and z=2 samples we will use NICMOS Camera 1 with the F110M and F165M filters respectively. Here we use MULTIACCUM mode to provide a long (2048 second) exposure with multiple reads to minimise the read noise. The remainder of the orbit is filled by a further 512-second MULTIACCUM exposure. Because our quasars are so faint there is no danger of saturation occurring. For the z=0.9 sample a single orbit will be sufficient to achieve the desired SNR. For the z=2 sample we require 4 orbits in order to reach the same SNR (3 for the lowest z objects). The NICMOS PSF in each filter will be determined by observations of two stars (to safeguard against the possibility of one of them possessing Vega-like shells which would compromise the PSF), close enough together to be observed within a single orbit. A series of exposures in MULTIACCUM mode (STEP256) will be used to obtain several unsaturated stellar images which can be stacked to produce PSFs of high dynamic range. Attached Parallels: Our strategy is to use Cameras 2 and 3 to sample the environment in roughly equidistant regions on either side of the quasar. Camera 3, being larger, will also give us some idea of the way in which the environment changes with distance from the quasar. Since there is no F110M filter on either camera we will use F110W instead when observing our z=0.9 sample. Camera 2 does have F165M, so we shall be using this when we observe our z=2 quasars, along with F160W in Camera 3. This will allow us to test the effect of including and excluding emission lines from our images.
