Abstract We propose to obtain high-resolution optical and NIR images for a complete sample of bulges of spiral galaxies. Data from NICMOS and WFPC2 will allow us to derive color and luminosity distributions in galactic bulges for radii as small as 10 pc. The sample consists of bulges of bright early-type spirals, with inclinations above 50 degrees, that allow us to see at least one side of the bulge unobscured by the disk. This sample has been extensively studied by us from the ground. We have analyzed the optical and NIR color distributions, as well as surface brightness profiles. We now wish to extend our study of the surface brightness and colors to the innermost parts of bulges, and increase our radial range considerably, down to an inner radius of a few parsecs. The color profiles will be used to determine the metallicity and age gradient in the inner regions. The color maps will provide useful information on the presence of nuclear disks. The color of the central region will be useful in detecting signature remnants of formation processes such as starbursts and merger- induced accretion. The surface brightness profile in H, unaffected by dust extinction effects, will provide interesting constraints on models of bulge formation. Finally, we will be able to determine the morphology in the radial range 10--100 pc, and to obtain statistical data on the presence of inner disks and bars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7450( 3) - 04/29/97 15:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The goal is to obtain images of the central parts of bulges in 3 broad, optical and NIR bandpasses: F450W, F814W, and F160W. Please note that the original proposal asked for R (F606W) passband, and that we have changed to I (F814W). The reason for this change is: we will obtain color-color population diagnostics from the data. Such diagnostics are more useful the redder one of the colors is. Having concluded that we cannot fit two NIR bandpass images per target in our scheme of 1 target per orbit, we have shifted the R image to I so that we obtain the color index I-H rather than R-H. If this change introduces conflicts with other proposals, we accept to shift back to F606W bandpass. The bulges that will be observed have high central surface brightness. To avoid saturation, and to still obtain sufficient signal-to-noise at the edges of the frames, we have split our exposures. Please use the gain of 14 electrons/ADU for the WFPC2, so that neither the short F450W image (200S) nor the short F814W image (50S) will be saturated. Our signal to noise will be such that at a distance of 3'' from the nucleus, where for the fainter galaxies of our sample we have a surface brightness of H=16.1, I=17.8 and B=19.9, the SNR per pixel will be 10. This means that by summing azimuthally in an annulus of width 0.1'', we will obtain colors with an uncertainty of less than 1%. We require the SNR at 3'' to be so high to be able to combine our ground-based data with the HST data. To obtain this goal we will integrate 2 x 128s in H (F160W), 50 + 120 (150)s in I (F814W) and 200 + 400 (500, 600)s in B (F814W). For the NICMOS observations we will use the MULTIACCUM mode with STEP32. That will allow us to keep track of the stability of the detector. Our sources are faint enough to not saturate. For the WFPC2 we will take 2 exposures in each filter. The long exposures in both filters might be saturated, but will not result in blooming. The center of the objects should fall onto the center of the PC. Our coordinates have an accuracy of about 0.5 arcsec in RA and Dec, since they have been measured by us on our optical CCD images, which, contrary to the POSS images, were not saturated.
