Abstract We request deep NICMOS images of 10 calibrator galaxies and 15 brightest cluster galaxies to determine their distances using the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) method. We will use this to construct an SBF Hubble diagram to distances greater than 10,000kms\ and to determine H_0 where peculiar motions should be negligible. Our clusters are chosen symmetrically around the sky so that this result should be extremely insensitive to the choice of velocity reference frame or any local peculiar velocities. HST is essential for its high spatial resolution which makes it possible to detect and remove globular clusters and background galaxies that contaminate the SBF measurement. The extremely red color of fluctuations give NICMOS in the H band a factor of 30 advantage over WFPC2 in the I band, and we will be observing the centers of galaxies which are much brighter than the H band background of NICMOS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7453( 12) - 11/14/97 16:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will measure distances to these galaxies by obtaining high signal-to-noise images and observing their surface brightness fluctuations (SBF), the irreducable mottling of an otherwise smooth galaxy from the finite number of stars. This has been described in detail in Tonry (1991) and Jacoby et al. (1992). The fundamental idea is simply that the finite number of stars in a galaxy gives rise to a measurable bumpiness in its surface brightness, even though individual stars remain completely unresolved. The variance is the product of the galaxy brightness per pixel and what we refer to as the ``average luminosity'' of the stellar population, the ratio of the second moment of the stellar luminosity function to the first: /line L = Sigma n_i L_i^2 / Sigma n_i L_i. Obviously there are many sources of pixel-to-pixel noise (variance) in an image of a galaxy such as detector noise and photon statistics, roughness from patchy dust obscuration, spiral arms, and inhomogeneous stellar population, bumpiness from globular clusters (GCs) or background galaxies, and finally the SBF mottling from the Poisson statistics of the finite number of stars in a pixel. Photon shot noise only grows as the square root of time, and the SBF signal becomes detectable when a source of /line L contributes more than one photon in an image ( i.e., when stellar counting statistics dominate photon counting statistics). We apply the SBF method primarily to E and S0 galaxies, which avoids problems with dust and spiral arms. Unraveling the third source of variance proceeds in two steps. First we identify as many ``compact sources'' (stars, background galaxies, and primarily GCs) as possible and excise them from the image. Second, we fit a luminosity function to the sources which we found and integrate the extrapolation to fainter magnitudes to determine the residual variance left in the image from the unseen sources. The variance from the SBF of stars in the galaxy is then the difference between that which is measured and the estimate of the residual. The fainter we can identify and remove sources, the smaller the residual correction so removal of compact sources makes it critical that the images be as sharp as possible. Blakeslee and Tonry (1995) give the fundamental formulae relating SBF and the variance of the compact sources remaining after removal of sources fainter than some cutoff m_c. We calculate that we can detect sources (at 4.5Sigma) to H=24.0 in one orbit and H=24.5 in two, and we anticipate that the peak of the globular cluster luminosity function (the main contributor of compact sources) will be at H=26.0 for the intermediate set of galaxies and H=26.9 for the distant set. At these limits we expect that the residual compact source contribution will be 0.1--0.2 of the SBF signal, and since we have quite an accurate estimate of the residual and subtract it, we believe that our measurement of /line m_H will be unbiased and limited by the cosmic scatter in /line M_H. A common concern about deriving distances from SBF measurements is the extent to which we can predict the absolute magnitudes /line M which correspond to the /line m which we measure. We have found empirically that stellar populations of differing age and metallicity vary predictably with overall color, and this has been confirmed theoretically (Worthey 1993). Nevertheless, we believe that our calibration galaxies are extremely important to give us an empirical zero point for this instrument and filter. We have extensive experience in measuring /line M in the I band (Tonry et al. 1996) and K band (Jensen et al. 1996), so we believe that we have good control over what will happen in the H band. We expect that the dependence of /line m_H on population will be quite modest, particularly since we have tried to pick quite a homogeneous set of galaxies (BCGs). Our experience in the K band indicates that AGB stars are not common enough to affect SBF measurements in these galaxies. We know from our ground- based observations and models by Worthey that /line M_H ~ - 5.3, and we know that a source of m_1 = 23.74 in F160W will give us 1 electron per second. Because of the small size of the detectors we prefer to collect 10e^-//line m rather than 5, so adopting H_0 = 70, we derive an expression for the required exposure time: t = 1200sec (D/5000 kms)^2. We will observe with NICMOS Camera 2, since it offers the best combination of resolution (the psf is almost critically sampled) and field of view (20"). We estimate that within a radius of 10" our objects will have surface brightness brighter than Mu_V = 20 or Mu_H = 17, hence receiving 3 e- /sec per pixel. The background for Camera 2 is estimated to be much smaller at 0.3 e-/sec per pixel, so it is a rather small contributor to noise. Assuming a 53 minute orbit devoted to one object, we allot 9 minutes for acquisition, 35 minutes of integration on our field of interest, broken into five 7 minute exposures for CR rejection, 2 minutes to move to a background field (where we will use gyros only for stabilization since we only need an average background level), and 7 minutes for integration on the background. For a two orbit observation there is a shorter reacquisiton and no need to redo the background. In the case of our calibrator galaxies (where we observe two galaxies per orbit) we will allot 18 minutes for acquisition, 5 minutes for slewing from one galaxy to background and then to the second galaxy, two 6 minute exposures per galaxy and one 6 minute background. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. We already have optical images and colors of most of these galaxies from ground based observations, and we will obtain observations of the remainder. These colors are important for distinguishing the different stellar populations which occur in galaxies.
