Abstract We propose NICMOS F110M and F160W measurements of infrared surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs) in 20 early-type Fornax galaxies. We have two goals. (1) We will calibrate IR SBFs for use as a cosmological distance indicator. This work is important because NICMOS offers the potential for accurate IR SBF distances as far as ~15,000 km/s, but the current calibration is inadequate since it is based only on M31 and is only at K-band. Fornax is the ideal cluster because targets are plentiful and have a spread in age/metallicity indicators, the cluster is compact, and an HST- Cepheid distance will soon be available. Together, these factors will allow us to accurately measure the IR SBF zeropoint and the stellar population correction that is crucial to the success of this method. Our work will also yield the intrinsic IR SBF dispersion and therefore the precision of IR SBF distances. (2) We will use our SBF data to test the latest population synthesis models; SBFs provide constraints on the stellar luminosity function unobtainable from integrated galaxian light alone. HST with NICMOS is the best instrument for this work: it offers comparable sensitivity for SBF detection to the Keck Telescopes, has improved psf and background stability which will reduce systematic errors, and its angular resolution allows for better recognition of globular clusters and background galaxies, which must be excised for unbiased SBF measurements. Our work will be a bridgehead for deeper NICMOS SBF programs to measure H_0. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7458( 5) - 11/11/97 13:47 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use NIC1+F110M and NIC2+F160W. Our choice ensures the data will be critically sampled, essential for SBF measurements. Camera 2 with F160W is the optimal choice for IR SBF work at large distances so calibrating this combination is essential. F110M provides a good compromise between throughput and the need for SBF colors in comparisons with population synthesis models. F110W has greater bandwidth; however, it is so wide (0.8-1.35 micron) that such data would reduce the sensitivity of the colors. Sufficient S/N to measure SBFs is achieved when there are enough photons per pixel so that SBFs are larger than the photon shot noise. Using updated NICMOS zeropoints and backgrounds and an assumed distance to Fornax of 18 Mpc, 800 s with NIC1+F110M and 270 s with NIC2+F160W achieves 2% errors in measuring the SBF apparent magnitude, i.e., at the level of psf and photometry calibration errors. Unidentified globular clusters (GCs) bias SBF data by adding excess variance. Adapting Blakeslee & Tonry (1995) to the IR, we find GCs contribute ~10% variance at the galaxy centers, but this can be modeled and removed with high accuracy. For the brighter galaxies in our sample, we will obtain NIC1+F110M and NIC2+F160W data both on and off-nucleus (at a distance of 33", the NIC1/NIC2 separation), while for the fainter galaxies we will only image the nucleus. In order to separate SBFs from photon shot noise, the galaxy images are analyzed in Fourier space. Since SBFs are due to Poisson statistical variations in the number of stars in a resolution element, SBFs are convolved with the telescope transfer function and carry the imprint of the psf power spectrum, while photon shot noise and electron read noise have flat power spectra. The power spectra of the galaxy images then is the sum of a constant (from the shot and read noise) and a scaled version of the psf power spectrum. Therefore we need to accurately measure the psf power spectrum to determine the SBF magnitude. Based on the known stability of the WFPC2 psf and the expected NICMOS psf behavior, we plan to use the psfs obtained by the NICMOS instrument team. However, we do plan to take some psf observations to perform our own monitoring. We will observe two psfs for each group of orbits contiguous in time. We have formed 2 groups of 5 visits using the 'GROUP WITH' requirement (visits 1-5 and 6-10). Each group should be taken >>continguous in time<< and should not be split or reorganized, as each set contains the necessary sky and psf calibration exposures. PSF measurement nearly simultaneous with the galaxy imaging is critical for our program. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- We request that matching dark frames be taken during the occultation period of our orbits. Our program needs accurate surface photometry of extended objects (galaxies) which fill NIC1 and NIC2. At the outer radii, the dark current can be a significant fraction of the object flux, hence the need for accurate darks. At least once during each group of 5 orbits (visits 1-5 and 6-10), we would like the following set of calibration darks. For NIC1 using MULTIACCUM: STEP256 (NSAMP=7,12), SPARS64 (NSAMP=6), and MIF512 (NSAMP=25). For NIC2 using MULTIACCUM: STEP256 (NSAMP=6,8,10). SPARS64 (NSAMP=4,6), and SPARS256 (NSAMP=3). If there is time, we would also like to have the following darks, though these are less critical than the aforementioned set. For NIC1 MULTIACCUM/STEP256 (NSAMP=8), MULTIACCUM/SPARS64 (NSAMP=4), and ACCUM (NREAD=9; 120.221 sec).
