Abstract Our WFPC2 observations of the field around the radio galaxy 53W002 (z=2.39) have discovered a remarkable population of Lyman Alpha emission-line objects at the same redshift, with 18 identified in a single WFPC2 mosaic. They are small and blue, with bulge-like profiles of effective radius 0.5--1 kpc. We surmise that these are part of the population of protogalaxies, most of which are faint enough to have escaped ground-based searches. We propose NICMOS observations of these objects to address some of the basic questions their presence raises: (1) When did they begin star formation? (2) Do the young stars trace their whole extents, or are they embedded in older stellar halos? (3) What is the gas metallicity in star- forming objects at z=2.4, and how dusty are they? A combination of direct imaging and grism observations with NICMOS proves very effective in addressing these, measuring age indicators in the stellar continuum, the profile of the emitted U-to-R light, and familiar ``optical" emission-line ratios. This is the richest known aggregate of galaxies at such redshifts, and thus a unique opportunity to study a whole population of such young (proto?)galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7459( 6) - 12/10/97 13:15 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our observations are laid out in three sets. First is direct imaging in F110W and F160W, to measure the 4000-Angstrom\\ break and any gradients therein with radius in as many cluster members as possible. Second, spectroscopy with grism B would measure O II, HBeta, and O III. Finally, more challenging spectroscopy with grism C to measure the HAlpha region would give star-formation rates and extinction estimates (in comparison with our Lyman Alpha fluxes). In all cases we use NIC3 for its wide field in imaging, to get as many cluster members as possible in a single pointing. We base our exposure estimates on IRTF K images and narrow-band CVF measurements in part of this field, indicating that most of the identified candidates have K=19--22 and HAlpha fluxes from 4 * 10^-18 W/m^2 downwards. We need to get 3 Sigma measurements of the HAlpha flux at least at the top of this flux range, and want 10\\ on each side of the redshifted 4000- Angstrom\\ break (observed at 1.36 Mu). Numerically folding evolutionary spectral models through the filter passbands at z=2.39 shows that this should give a break amplitude sufficient for age measurement at the accuracy level +/- ~ 2 * 10^8 years for a simple burst population. We can target 7 known cluster members in a single carefully selected NICMOS pointing, including 2 spectroscopic AGN; a second pointing will add another five. Some of these objects are multiple at the subarcsecond level, so we can actually observe about 15 objects in these two fields. In view of the calculated exposure times, we propose two pointings for the direct images and single pointings for grism observations. Direct imaging: Our objects will be young stellar populations in the range V~23-25.5 mag, and since their unreddened optical--IR colors may in the worst case be as blue as V--K~2--3 mag and I--K~1--2 mag (see the models in Fig. 3 of Windhorst et al. 1994, ApJ 435, 577), we expect that some of these objects may be as faint as K~22-23 mag or H~21--22.5 mag (since for any reasonable spectral evolution model the H-K color hovers around 0.5--1.0 mag for z~0.5--3.0). We need 10\\ F110W and F160W filters which are weighted nicely on either side of the age-sensitive 4000-Angstrom\\ break. From the WWW exposure estimator, this will require modest integrations to reach this deep into the luminosity function (from K=20 to K=23) -- of order 1500 seconds per filter. For better sampling of the NIC3- PSF as well as the best possible sky- subtraction, we plan dither patterns with N+0.5 pixel offsets in each axis. This lets us add a dimension to our study of the objects' structure, looking not only for color gradients but more specifically gradients in the 4000- Angstrom\\ break with radius. We have developed the needed modelling techniques from analysis of our cycle 5 dithered WFPC2 data, and can retrieve effective radii of less than 1 pixel with 10\\ by generating families of artificial images with various profile, scale length, and shape, convolving with instrumental PSF (and including sampling effects), and fitting to the data in a Chi^2 sense. Grism spectroscopy: HAlpha appears at 2.22 Mu, unfortunately in the high-background grism 3 regime. Extrapolating the results of the WWW exposure estimator (since we need only S/N~ 1 per pixel in the continuum), we will get 3 Sigma measurements of HAlpha for rest-frame equivalent widths greater than about 80 Angstrom\\ at K=19 in about 10000 seconds (about 4 orbits). We can in principle detect (though not at individually high significance) fluxes lower than this, since the object positions and redshifts are independently specified. We can use small in-field dither motions, rather than out-of-field chopping, for background measurement, since all objects in this field are tiny. For strong detections, we might be able to extract N II/HAlpha ratios, since the wavelength separation between the lines is about 0.7 pixel and the object location and redshift are well known from the ground- based MMT and Keck spectroscopy. Binning the continuum longward and shortward of HAlpha will give two extra continuum points in the broad-band energy distribution, for objects not too close to the edge of the field, at S/N~ 10. Note that for both grism observations, the F160W direct images will give the matched broadband data for object location. The additional lines of O II Lambda 3727, HBeta, and O III Lambda 5007 appear in the grism 2 range, from 1.26-- 1.69Mu. These are powerful diagnostics of the nature of emission-line sources. Broad HBeta (or HAlpha in grism 3, for that matter) betrays nuclear activity. For other objects, with ionization from young stars, these lines can be used for a rough metallicity indicator (basically, of O/H unless the metallicity is too far below solar and the nebular cooling is in the Balmer rather than collisionally-excited lines). HBeta and O III can be separated cleanly for such small objects, lying 7 pixels apart at z=2.39; the objects have half-light radii smaller than a NIC3 pixel so image smearing will not compromise spectral resolution. We estimate exposure times assuming that the O III flux is comparable to the predicted HAlpha flux, and aiming for a S/N ratio of 10 for HBeta assumed three times weaker than HAlpha; that is, S/N=10 at 5 * 10^-6 Jy after the line/continuum scaling as in the NICMOS handbook for exposure estimates, as updated with the new sensitivities in the WWW tool, which gives a necessary exposure of 8000 seconds. We deal with confusion in the grism observations by using our high-quality substepped WFPC2 images, including BVI fluxes for each object, to predict position angles for which confusion of known z=2.39 objects is minimized (spectra in position angle 29-34^degrees for the richest group in Fig. 1). This can be checked after the fact using the deep direct images obtained for 4000- Angstrom\\ break measures. The total exposure time we are requesting is thus 10,000 seconds (grism 3) plus 8000 seconds (grism 2) plus 6000 seconds for direct images, two each at 1500 seconds in two adjacent fields. This total 24,000 seconds exposure, which with modest overheads will require 10 orbits, as from previous Cycle experience we know that we can do at least a full 2700 sec of exposures in each orbit (after the initial acquisition, and including overhead) in this part of the sky. We note that the odds are good of picking up at least one additional known cluster member for the 4000-Angstrom\\ break measurement in cameras 1 and 2 during the grism observations of the richest set of identified members, in a very direct parallel science opportunity, should confocality of the cameras be possible during this cycle.
