Abstract We propose to use the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph to observe a recently- discovered optical Einstein ring. The presence of a strong Ly_Alpha emission line in the spectrum of the ring allows one to map the position of the emission line peak around the ring, thereby measuring velocity differences in the extended source object, a star-forming galaxy at z=3.6. Our recent ground-based observations of this system (Lewis & Ibata 1996), which spatially resolved five elements around the ring, suggest that this distant galaxy is rotating at ~ 200 km/s (half-amplitude). The consequences of this result to models of galaxy formation is considerable, suggesting that the disk component of the source galaxy has formed by that redshift. However, the lack of spatial resolution in the ground-based data precludes the derivation of a rotation curve of the source galaxy. Here we propose to use the unique spatial resolution of STIS to obtain ~ 40 spatially-resolved spectra around the circumference of the Einstein ring. This will allow us to verify the result based upon the crudely- resolved ground-based data. Coupled with an accurate lensing model to be determined from WFPC2 observations (time has been allocated in cycle 6), the STIS data will yield a rotation curve in one of the most distant known galaxies, allowing the confrontation of models of galaxy formation to data from the earliest epochs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7462( 10) - 07/11/00 08:30 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The aim of this experiment is to resolve spatially the wavelength position of the peak of the Ly_Alpha emission line in the spectrum of the Einstein ring. To do this efficiently, we will place the STIS slit tangentially over the ring. Since the width of the ring will be unresolved, the slit may be widened without loss of spectroscopic resolution. A 0 nd5 wide slit, placed such that the slit- edge furthest from the ring's center lies 0 nd05 outside the ring, will allow us to probe a quarter of the circumference of the ring in a single pointing. Four pointings are required to cover the ring. \medskip The observations will be divided into two visits. In visit 2, the roll angle of the telescope should be at 90^degrees to what it was in visit 1. Fourteen orbits per visit are requested. The first orbit per visit has significant overheads (~ 26 min), but thereafter overheads are small (~ 8 min). Seven orbits in the first slit position gives a total exposure time of 18000 sec, split into seven exposures, one per orbit. The slit will then be stepped 2 nd3 to the other side of the ring. The six subsequent orbits of the visit then give a total of 19000 sec of exposure. \medskip In the wavelength region near the emission line peak, the flux from the emission line will be ~ 1. * 10^-17 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 per spatial resolution element. The background continuum flux from the galaxy is significantly lower, and can be neglected. The above exposure times will ensure S/N > 5 in the emission line in each spatial resolution element, which as argued above, is sufficient to achieve our scientic goals.
