Proposal For 3. Cycle GO 7 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Investigators Contact? PI: Philip Massey National Optical Astronomy Observatories ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract The galaxies of the Local Group provide the laboratories for testing how massive stars evolve as a function of metallicity. Massive stars lose mass via stellar winds at a rate significant on an evolutionary time-scale; since this mass- loss is driven by radiation pressure in highly ionized metal lines, the amount of mass shed during the main-sequence phase should differ in galaxies of differing metallicities. Indeed, large differences in the relative numbers of evolved massive stars (WC and WN Wolf-Rayet stars, Luminous Blue Variables, Ofpe/WN9 ``slash" stars, and red supergiants) are seen among the various Local Group galaxies that have been well studied. We propose here to finish our work to determine empirically what mass ranges evolve into particular types of evolved massive stars, and how these various limits depends upon metallicity. These will provide the critical observatonal benchmarks needed by evolutionary theory. We can do this by obtaining the cluster ``turn-off masses" in the highly coeval OB associations containing evolved objects. Our ground-based and WFPC2 imaging of selected regions in NGC 6822, M 31, and M 33 have identified the candidate turn-off stars, and extensive spectroscopy has been carried out from the ground. But we now now need STIS to obtain spectra of those turn-off candidates which were shown by our WFPC2 images as too crowded to do from the ground. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7464( 4) - 10/15/97 09:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ STIS Spectroscopy: Our observing procedure will be to peak up on an isolated, nearby (<1') star of appropriate brightness, and then offset to the target star. (Relative positions to 0.02" have been determined using ``metric" run on our WFPC2 images). We will then expose for the rest of the orbit, using a second orbit for our fainter stars. We computed the number of needed orbits as follows. For each visit, the overhead for the first orbit was assumed to be 9 min (GS acquisition) plus 10 min (ACQ/PEAKUP) plus 1 min (offset) plus 5 min (instrument overhead) plus 1 min (CR- SPLIT read-down) = 26 min of overhead. That leaves 27 min for the science observation during the first orbit, and we computed the SNR we would obtain with the G430L grating for our target stars. We require a SNR of 30 per 2-pixel spectral resolution element, and if the SNR fell short of that, we found the SNR we would gain in a second orbit. (The overhead for the second orbit is assumed to be 6 min for the GS reacquisition plus 1 min for CR-SPLIT, leaving 45 min for science integration. Thus, a two- orbit visit consists of 77 min worth of integration.) The SNR was computed using the STIS Exposure Time Calculator (using the revised, lower efficiencies for G430L) and checked against Fig 13.12 in the STIS manual (based upon the old efficiencies) for reasonability. In practice this means that for stars with B<18.7 (V<18.8), one orbit is adequate. For stars with B>18.7 we require 2 orbits. (Our faintest star at B=19.8 reaches a SNR of 29 in 77 min.) All of this assumes a typical E(B-V)=0.15 for our regions (Massey et al.\\\\\\\\ 1995a), and is computed for Lambda=4400Angstrom, near where the most important classification lines lie. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Ground-based UBV CCD imaging selected the original sample of candidate stars, followed by spectroscopy with the KPNO and CTIO 4-m telescopes, WIYN, and the MMT of the least croweded stars (Massey, Armandroff, & Conti 1986 AJ, 273, 576; Massey et al.\\\\\\\\ 1995, AJ, 110, 2715). These data have allowed us define the problem: the photometry and spectral types have narrowed the list of candidate turn-off stars in each of these associations. WFPC2 images were obtained during Cycle 5 of fields in M33 and M31; these have identified cases where crowding wasn't apparent from the ground. We are continuing to obtain optical spectral types for the remaining uncrowded candidates, but we have basically pushed the ground-based spectroscopy to its limit. We now need the high spatial resolution of HST to obtain spectra of the stars that may be the most luminous/massive in these clusters, but which are simply too crowded to do from the ground. Studies of Galactic OB associations have been completed (Massey et al.\\\\\\\\ 1995b), and observing time is currently scheduled for October 1996 at CTIO to determine the turn-off masses for Magellanic Cloud OB associations containing evolved objects. (This will complement our data on the mixed-age, field population of the Magellanic Clouds Massey et al.\\\\\\\\ 1995c, which suggests that the mass-limit for evolution to the WR stage is somewhat higher in the low-z MCs, although not by as much as theory predicts.) Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Coordinates generally come from using "metric" on F555W Cycle_5 WFPC2 images. Relative coordinates good to 0.02". Exposure times for ACQ's come from STIS Imaging ETC with long-pass filter for SN of 60 (rather than 40) and then doubling the exposure time for padding. Exposure times for ACQ/PEAKS are with "clear" filter, SNR of 100 (rather than 5400 counts), and then doubling it to account for slit losses and provide a little padding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7464( 4) - 10/15/97 09:31 - [ 3] Data Distribution Media: ELECTRONIC Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7464( 4) - 10/15/97 09:31 - [ 4] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 M31-OB48- EXT-STAR RA=00H 45M 9.9837S +/- J2000 V = 16.8+/-0.2 OFFSET 0.002S,DEC=41D 36' 56.545" +/- B-V = 0.14+/-0.1 0.02",PLATE-ID=0738 U-B = -0.32 E(B-V) = 0.2 Comments: Isolated star in OB48 to be used for offsets in Visit_1.
