Abstract This program is the complement of our Cycle 4, 5 and 6 programs aimed at using the White Dwarf cooling sequence for the calibration of the globular cluster distance scale. In fact, determination of accurate distances is a critical prerequisite for the estimate of reliable cluster ages. To have fully comparable data sets on the 2 clusters, we apply for deep B data for 47Tuc. This will allow us to mutually fit the WD cooling sequences of the two clusters to one another, thus giving very accurate relative distances (hence ages). The determination of accurate relative ages for this pair of metal rich/metal poor clusters will provide fundamental evidence on the time scale of the formation of the Galactic halo. In addition, we also need UBVI photometry of a few more local calibrating WDs with accurate absolute magnitudes from trig parallax and/or spectroscopy, to improve upon the White Dwarf Fiducial Cooling Sequences (FCS) that we have started to construct in Cycle 4 and 5. The observed cooling sequences for the clusters is to be fit to the corresponding FCSs to determine accurate cluster distance moduli and absolute ages. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7465( 6) - 04/30/99 12:05 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ (a) Cluster observations: We need to observe 47Tuc with the B filter in exactly the SAME position given for Cycle 5 GO 6114 (~ 300" from the center), to complement those observations. For the cluster we assume E(B-V)=0.04 and mod=13.30. We wish to measure with sufficient photometric precision (S/N=10 at V=26) the cluster WD cooling sequence. The exposure times have been computed using the WFPC2 simulator for point sources available trough WWW, and based on the most recent WFPC2 Handbook. Excluding acquisition and overheads, the visibility time per orbit for 47Tuc (non-CVZ) is about 3000 seconds: we can accomodate 2 x 1500sec exposures per orbit. To reach a total S/N=10 in the WF chips for the WD cooling sequence at V=26 we then need a total of 15000 sec, or 5 orbits. (b) Field WDs exposures: We also require observations of further field WDs with accurate absolute magnitudes; U, B, V, I filters are mandatory, since the new WDs will be used in conjunction with the Cycle 4 and 5 ones to build up a more accurately defined Fiducial Cooling Sequence. In the case of the local calibration WD exposures we have used the same photometric data and method described above to calculate exposure times, in order to have approximately S/N=100 for all the four filters. Each WD will have to be observed once per filter and chip, for a total of 16 exposures on the same WD. The total exposure time (shutter open) for the calibration WDs is less than about 1500 sec, but readouts and changes of pointings/filters/etc. require at least 1 orbit per WD, for a total of 6 orbits (4 of the 5 WDs are observable in CVZ). This leads to a calibration effort whose requirements, in terms of spacecraft time, approach that for the observations of the target clusters themselves. Once defined, however, such a calibrated FCS has wide potential application to distance determinations of other clusters. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Four of the field WDs can be observed in CVZ, so the total number of orbits is decresed. NGC104 could be observed in CVZ, but we do not strictly require it. In fact we need a specific Position Angle, since we have to acquire the images in exactly the same position of proposal P6114 (PI A. Renzini), and the two requirements may be exclusive.
