Abstract We propose to determine the internal velocity distribution of the globular clusters NGC 104 (47 Tuc), NGC 6752, and NGC 7078 (M15) in their cores and as a function of distance from the cluster center, and thus also infer their mass distribution. NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc are two of the most nearby globular clusters and therefore provide excellent opportunities to derive definitive values (1-2%) comparison of a cluster that fits the classic King profile (47 Tuc) to one in the post-core-collapse stage of evolution (NGC 6752). M15 is more distant, but is very interesting due to the complex nature of its core. Even at its distance, we expect to determine its velocity dispersion to an accuracy of 3% in the core. We will also derive kinematic distances for the above clusters by comparison to existing radial velocity data. These distances would be good to 1-3% if the radial velocity data were of the expected accuracy of the proper motions. Instead, we will be limited by the radial velocities to 5-10% accuracy, which should still have considerable impact on the derived luminosities of the RR Lyrae stars and their role in the cosmological distance scale. The HST Astrometry Science Team obtained GTO first-epoch exposures of the above clusters and two others (M13 and M22). In this proposal the HST AST and its collaborators propose to take the second-epoch exposures under GO time for the first three clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7469( 5) - 02/15/99 12:17 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The first-epoch exposures were taken with the (aberrated) PC camera using a strategy of a central exposure and then offsetting by ~100 pixels into each quadrant for an additional four exposures in order to derive an accurate differential distortion calibration for each cluster and at each position within the cluster. Three of the exposures were taken in the F555W filter and two in the F785LP filter so that color information would be available for all stars. More intensive astrometric calibration (five more offset exposures) was done on three clusters to obtain even higher accuracy. Two series of exposures of 25 and 100 seconds were made in the core to sample a wide range of magnitude to study equipartition of energy, while one series of exposures of 1000 seconds was taken at five and ten core radii to study the change in the velocity distribution as a function of radius. Similar second-epoch exposures are proposed here. For the second-epoch exposures, we plan to use the average of the first-epoch exposures as an "astrometric flat-field" for reducing the second epoch, thus the ~100 pixel offsets will not be required. Instead, the F555W and F785LP exposures at each pointing will be 'dithered' with much smaller offsets, with three to four exposures per filter giving us the required 1 mas centering precision. Due to the unfortunate omission of three of the WFPC2 PC chips in the new camera, we will only have one-quarter of each field per exposure. Therefore POS TARGS will be used to sample three of the four quadrants of the orginal WFPC PC. This will require 2 orbits per cluster, per pointing with 26-s exposure times that will "match" the first-epoch exposures (100-s) in the cores. In the off-core images, 260-s exposures are needed to match the first-epoch (1000-s) exposures, requiring three orbits. It is not possible to match all four old PC quadrants in the allotted number of orbits. Therefore, our strategy is to match three of the four and recover the fourth PC quadrant to a large extent by combining the larger-pixel but more numerous WF exposures of that quadrant that resulted from the other three quadrants' PC pointings. (For NGC6752 and NGC104 there is sufficient time to take one exposure in the fourth quadrant.) To match the first-epoch PC position and orientation, we give all the target positions in terms of the desired r.a. and dec. of the WFPC2 apex. This allows some flexibility in the orientation in the sense that adding N x 90 degrees to the specified ORIENT is acceptable as well. We indicate our first choices for the ORIENT based on the desired epoch of the exposures. Real Time Justification ----------------------- A moderate orientation constraint will be requested to give approximate alignment with the first-epoch GTO exposures. In the Visits Comments we indicate the preferred scheduling window which will result in the desired epoch difference between our first and these second-epoch exposures.
