Abstract Deep WFPC2 observations that we carried out in Cycle 4 and 5 of many globular clusters have shown a remarkably common feature in the luminosity function of these objects, i.e. a peak at M_I~eq 8.5 followed by a sharp drop all the way to the detection limit. The corresponding mass functions appear to flatten out below ~ 0.2 Msun and possibly drop, with some metallicity dependence. The deepest presently available data seem to indicate that the luminosity function may drop to zero near the H-burning limit. If confirmed, this finding will have strong implications on the physical mechanisms giving rise to low-mass stars, on the contribution of globular clusters to the dark matter in the Galaxy, and on the nature of dark matter itself. To precisely address this issue, however, requires higher sensitivity than has been so far available. We, therefore, propose to use the unprecedented IR imaging capabilities of NICMOS to study the low-mass stars at the end of the main sequence in four nearby globular clusters spanning a wide range of metallicity, precisely at the wavelength corresponding to their maximum emission (~ 1.1 Mum). These observations would complete our ongoing investigation by making it possible, for the first time, to reliably count stars right down to and beyond the main sequence H- burning limit, thus leaving no doubt as to whether the IMF indeed drops there or starts rising once again close to the limit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7474( 23) - 04/23/98 12:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose the use of NICMOS to obtain deep J- and H-band images of four globular clusters to study the low mass end of the luminosity and mass functions. We have selected our sample of objects (listed in Table 1) in such a way that the effect of metallicity on the IMF of the stellar population can be investigated for VLM stars through the analysis of their present-day MF. Our targets, therefore, span a large range of metallicity (column 4). For each of the target clusters we already have deep V- and I-band WFPC2 observations collected near the cluster half-mass (r_hm~ half-light) radius, where the present-day MF is expected to be as close as possible to the IMF (Richer et al. 1991). Using these data, we have identified for each cluster a region free from bright, red stars where we would locate the NIC3 camera to maximize the number of stars in the sample, at the same time minimizing any risk of saturation. We also plan on observing a second field, located at ~ 1.5 r_hm for NGC 104 and closer to the center (~ 0.5 r_hm) for the other, less dense clusters. This second field will ensure a more robust determination of the LF and will provide a detailed map of mass segregation, thus allowing a closer insight into the relaxation mechanism that govern GCs' dynamics. begintablet begintabularlcccccccc multicolumn7cTable1: Physical parameters of the selected clusters and required exposure times, multicolumn1cCluster &(*) &(*) &(*) & SNR &t_ F110W & t_ F160W & Total, multicolumn1lNGC & multicolumn1c(m--M)_O & multicolumn1cE(B--V) & multicolumn1cFe/H & multicolumn1c & multicolumn1c(min)& multicolumn1c(min)& multicolumn1cOrb., 104 & 13.3 & 0.04 & -0.7 & 11 & 70 &120 & 6 , & & & (NIC2)& 8 & 70 &120 & 2 , 6121 & 11.5 & 0.40 & -1.3 & 23 & 17 & 25 & 3 , 6397 & 11.9 & 0.18 & -1.9 & 18 & 17 & 25 & 3 , 6752 & 13.1 & 0.04 & -1.5 & 11 & 35 & 50 & 3 , endtabular, (*) Djorgovski (1993) endtable Each field will be observed through the F110W and F160W filters of NIC3. The NIC3 camera has a plate-scale of 0sec point2, twice as large as that of the WF chips of the WFPC2. We have used the available deep WFPC2 I-band images of these GCs and binned them by a factor of 2 in order to simulate the level of crowding that we would face by using NIC3. We have found that, at the radial distances discussed above, the reduced plate-scale is not such as to compromise photometric completeness, and that several hundreds to more than one thousand low-mass stars will be available in each field to build a solid LF. We, nevertheless, propose to repeat the observation of the field at the half-mass radius of NGC 104 (the densest one) also with NIC2, whose plate-scale is the same as that of WFPC2. These observations will require two more orbits, but will also provide a very reliable determination of the photometric completeness from which corrections can be derived for the NIC3 frames. Exposure times have been calculated with the NICMOS simulator provided by the STScI. We have folded our most recent theoretical models (D'Antona & Mazzitelli 1996) and stellar atmospheres (Allard & Hauscildt 1995) through SYNPHOT to translate the I- band fluxes of VLM stars observed with the WFPC2 in GCs into fluxes and magnitudes in the NICMOS filter system. The NICMOS simulator has then been employed to estimate the exposure times needed to reach SNR>~ 10 in the central pixel for stars with masses around ~ 0.1 - 0.08 Msun and with the metallicity and distance appropriate to our targets. Our experience with the WFPC2 shows, in fact, that a SNR of at least ~ 5 in the PSF peak is mandatory to efficiently identify faint stars and to guarantee accurate photometric measurements. Below this threshold, dark current fluctuations, as well as hot pixels and cosmic rays not properly removed, make detection very problematic and photometry increasingly less reliable (i.e. incomplete). Because of the NIC3 undersampling, an even stronger SNR is needed to proceed to a reliable identification of VLM stars. This will also make it easier to discriminate, through profile fitting, between stars and faint galaxies, which represent a significant source of contamination at V> 26, as shown by the investigations of the Hubble Deep Field. Exposure times for each field are given in columns 6 and 7, whereas the total orbit request, including two regions per cluster and a control field (see below), is reported in column 8. Our goal is to precisely place the objects detected near the H-burning limit on an IR color-magnitude diagram and to test beyond doubt whether or not the LF drops to zero at the bottom of the MS. Of course, to derive the MF, we need to convert the LF, derived from the observed data, by the use of the M-L relation. This is a very delicate issue, which has plagued previous determinations of the MF in GCs, because of the uncertainties associated with the M-L relation itself at these low masses. Evolutionary models and stellar atmospheres for stars down to the H -burning minimum mass that we have recently developed (D'Antona & Mazzitelli 1996; Allard & Hauschildt 1995), however, appear today to be secure and to find satisfactory confirmation in the observational data. A weakness in many attempts to determine the LF in GCs is related to contamination by field stars. Our technique, based on two-color photometry and on the use of the CMD as a tool to define cluster membership, has proved relatively safe in this respect. Because of the profound implications that the results of this research could have, however, we propose to dedicate one orbit per each cluster to image, in the same two filters, a region well away from the cluster itself and at the same Galactic latitude (and, for NGC 104, with similar distance to the Small Magellanic Cloud). These control fields will guarantee a statistically much more reliable measure of the LF, even at low magnitudes where extragalactic objects become predominant and, also, provide in this way excellent information on the halo LF. We do not require any special calibration, since standard PIPELINE procedures for dark current, bias and flat field calibration is enough for our purposes. The standard IRAF digiphot.apphot aperture photometry package as well as the digiphot.daophot and ROMAFOT PSF-fitting photometry packages for more crowded fields, will be used for data reductions as described in De Marchi & Paresce (1995a). Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Two of the targets of our investigation are suitable for CVZ observing. We would then like to take advantage of this opportunity to make our program more compact and efficient. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7474( 23) -
