Abstract We propose to obtain observations with STIS of the Wolf-Rayet eclipsing binary HD5980 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a unique system which has recently undergone a giant LBV-type eruptive event, perhaps similar to the Great Eruption in Eta Carinae. Wind structure changes over the past 16 years have led to a reduction in wind velocities, enhanced visual luminosities, and spectral changes from WN3 to B1.5Ia+. The winds of the two eclipsing stars can be separated: one of the stars has a stable wind velocity of 1700 km/s while the second star's wind is highly variable, presenting clear evidence for a bimodal velocity structure. The latter is identified as the erupting star. Because of its increasingly unstable activity over the past 4 years, HD5980 may undergo further eruptive episodes in the future, and because it's wind characteristics are still changing, continued monitoring, especially at UV wavelengths, are crucial for understanding this unprecedented phenomenon. UV observations are also required in order to: a] help resolve the controversy regarding which of the two members of the binary pair erupted, information which is essential for comparison with current evolutionary models of massive stars; b] obtain high S/N line profiles for comparison with wind-wind and atmospheric eclipse models; and c] detect newly forming circumstellar structures predicted for such changing wind velocity cases. HST is currently the only observatory capable of providing the required data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7480( 13) - 02/15/00 07:43 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to observe HD5980 with STIS at 6 key phases (0.0, 0.05, 0.16, 0.36, 0.41 and 0.84) of the orbital period, phases which allow the various contributions to the spectrum to be separated, and an analysis of the atmospheric eclipses performed. Continuum eclipses occur at phases 0.0 and 0.36; atmospheric eclipses occur at 0.05 and 0.41. No previous UV observations exist at phase 0.16, nor at precisely 0.36 at high dispersion. Because of the secular variability, it is crucial to obtain the observations within the same 19.266-day orbital cycle, or in two or at most three consecutive orbital cycles. Spectra at orbital phase 0.84 exist for nearly all previous sets of UV observations obtained by IUE, and will be used to isolate the secular, long term variations, particularly those related to wind-wind collision effects. A total of 12 orbits for the 6 visits is required. The configurations that are requested are: 1] CCD first order spectroscopy to cover the entire wavelength range available (1600 + 10000 A), using the 52x0.2 slit; the exposure time calculated using an IUE low dispersion spectrum of HD5980 for the UV wavelength range, and ground based spectra for visible-near IR is under 1 minute for each wavelength range for S/N greater than 100. Two positions with grating G750M will be used: at central wavelengths 5734A and 6768A. The former covers the region of the important WR emision lines CIV 5808A and HeI 5876A. The latter covers Halpha. These long slit observations also permit to carry out a study of the nebular environment of HD5980 2] FUV-MAMA high resolution echelle spectroscopy with grating E140M to cover the wavelength range 1150-1735A using the 0.2x0.2 slit; the calculated exposure time, based on the IUE spectrum of HD5980, is 2800 seconds for a S/N of 40 at 1500A. The strongest line in the spectrum is He II 1640A and it has a count rate of 0.16 counts/s/pix, which is well below the safety limits of the FUV-MAMA detector. 3] The strong need for observing this binary system at precise orbital phases does necessarily require that each visit with the CCD observations (ORBIT 1) is continued by the MAMA observation (ORBIT 2). 4] The long slit is used in the low dispersion configuration. The SAME ORIENT AS requirement for all visits will allow collection of more counts from the surrounding nebula and better overall S/N. Given that all visits should be completed within 2-3 orbital periods this is not a very stringent requirement. Real Time Justification ----------------------- HD 5980 is an eclipsing binary with a period of 19.3 days. We request 6 visits within the same binary orbit (or consecutives 2-3 binary orbits). The requested key phases are: 0.00, 0.05, 0.16, 0.36, 0.41, 0.84. Continued monitoring of HD 5980 from the Complejo Astronomico El Leoncito (CASLEO), San Juan, Argentina, is underway, and once HST observations are to be scheduled, efforts will be made to obtain as simultaneous as possible optical data from this observatory, as well as coordinated observations at Cerro Tololo (Chile). Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Exposure times were calculated using our spectra of HD5980. Ground based spectrophotometric images were obtained in July 1996 (CASLEO, Argentina), when the system reached its "quiescent" stage. IUE low-dispersion spectra were obtained in Sep 1995 and 1981. HD5980 will be monitored from ground based telescopes when definitive schedule for HST is available to prevent any brightness increase that may affect the FUV-MAMA detector. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7480( 13) - 02/15/00 07:43 - [ 3] Data Distribution Paper Products: YES Media: DAT Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7480( 13) - 02/15/00 07:43 - [ 4] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD5980 EXT-STAR, WOLF RAYET - RA=00H 59M 26.53S +/- 0.3S, DEC= J2000 V = +150 V = +11.2+/-0.4 WN, LUMINOUS BLUE -72D 9' 54.3" +/- 0.3", PLATE- F(1240)=7.0+/-1.0e-12 VARIABLE, INTERACTING ID=06B1 F(1300)=4.0+/-0.5e-12 BINARY, EMISSION LINE F(1640)=1.6+/-2.0e-11 F(2000)=1.8+/-0.2e-12 F(3000)=0.6+/-0.1e-12 F(4000)=2.9+/-0.2e-13 F(4690)=9.0+/-1.0e-13 F(6550)=6.5+/-0.5e-14 Comments: Erupting eclipsing binary with 0.3-0.4 eclipse F(10000)=2.0+/-0.2e-14 amplitude.
