Abstract We propose to acquire STIS low-resolution UV spectra of early B-supergiants in M31 and M33 to determine the terminal velocities of their stellar winds. The velocities are crucial to derive distances to the hot stars using the Wind-momentum Luminosity Relationship (WLR), in conjunction with existing moderate- and high-resolution spectra from 4m class telescopes and the Keck-I telescope respectively, and WFPC2 multi-colour photometry to be obtained soon during Cycle 6. The radiation- driven stellar wind momenta and the metallicities determined from our optical and UV- spectra translate via the WLR into intrinsic luminosities. The HST photometry provides accurate de-reddened apparent magnitudes within the crowded field of the M31 and M33 spiral arms and then -- together with the intrinsic luminosities -- distances. The resulting WLR distances to M31 and M33 will be compared to the distances from Cepheids (where metallicity and extinction influences are less tractable), as a basis for extending the WLR method beyond the Local Group out to the Virgo cluster of galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7481( 17) - 06/20/00 09:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our targets have spectral types between B0 and B2.5. Therefore, the resolution of the G140L grating of 300 km/s is adequate for the task of measuring the terminal velocities of early B-type supergiants which are expected to lie in the range 700-1500 km/s. (Examples how terminal velocities are determined at this resolution are given by Haser et al. 1995 and Bianchi et al., 1994). The wavelength region contains the important resonance lines of CIV, SiIV, NV, CII for example which may be used for this purpose. We require a S/N of approximately 30 however and all exposure times were calculated with this constraint. In order to estimate exposure times we have estimated the UV flux at 1500A either using model atmospheres or directly from UV observations taken at a lower resolution. Some UV magnitudes were taken from the UIT observations discussed by Massey et al (1996, ApJ, 469, 629), which gives UV magnitudes for stars in M33. These flux values were used to estimate the exposure times using the STIS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) on the WWW. The high S/N moderate- and high-resolution optical spectroscopy required to derive mass-loss rates, wind terminal velocities, and photospheric chemical compositions for the A and B supergiant targets in M31 and M33 has already been obtained using ground-based 4 m class telescopes at Calar Alto and La Palma (PI's Lennon and Herrero, respectively), as well as the 10 m Keck I telescope and HIRES spectrograph (McCarthy, PI). More data will be obtained in observing runs scheduled over the course of the next few months. In addition, WFPC2 multicolour photometry will be carried out soon during Cycle 6 (PI McCarthy). Reductions, detailed model atmosphere abundance analyses, and stellar wind analyses of the observed HAlpha profiles are in progress, with preliminary results for several stars already submitted for publication (or papers to be finished for submission within the next month), see references in the main case for support. Additionally, we maintain a vigorous theoretical stellar atmospheres and UV/optical observing program focussed on the winds of hot stars, with HST/GHRS observations in Cycles 5 and 6 scheduled to refine the wind- momentum luminosity relationship for A- and B-type supergiants in the SMC and LMC. These HST spectra of blue supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds will improve the existing empirical calibration of the WLR to be used by this proposal for distance determinations in M31 and M33. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The TAC allocated an additional 2 orbits to this proposal with the recommendation that they be used to increase the number of targets. We have therefore included the star M33-UIT249, which is distant from the center of M33 and should therefore sample a region of very low metallicity. All co-ordinates were measured on DSS images according to the recommended procedure. However in some cases, given the faintness of targets and crowding problems, it was not possible to obtain a convincing centroid for the relevant target. We therefore adopted the pixel center of the brightest pixel corresponding to our target position. This should be adequate since in no case was there an object within the 3X3 pixel (approximately 5X5 arcsec) region centered on this pixel of comparable brightness. Note that we have a Cycle 6 WFPC2 program still pending (ID 6651, PI McCarthy) which will image some of the present targets.
