The targets have been chosen on the basis of an extensive analysis based mainly on peculiar photometric properties suggesting a possible binary nature. In particular, the components of these systems should have equilibrium shapes, and should derive from the collisional disruptions of single parent bodies. The existence of binary systems among asteroids is suggested by theoretical considerations, and has been recently confirmed by radar observations of near-Earth asteroids and direct imaging from the Galileo probe of asteroid 243 Ida. The size ratios, orbital periods and relative separations of the components of binary systems can give us important information on the mechanisms of formation of the systems, and on the overall process of collisional evolution of the asteroids. The HST FGS in interferometric mode would be uniquely capable to carry out this program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7488( 65) - 12/27/99 14:33 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All of our proposed exposures use the TRANS mode of the astrometer FGS (FGS 3). As described in the FGS Instrument Handbook (Version 4.0), and in recently published papers (Bernacca et al. 1993, Lattanzi et al. 1994) this mode samples the interference fringe produced by the Koester's prism interferometer, the ``heart'' of the Fine Guidance Sensor. There are two Koester's prism interferometers in each FGS to give sensitivity in two orthogonal directions, usually referred to as X and Y axes. Therefore, each FGS3 TRANS scan produces two fringes which can then be independently analyzed for signatures other than those characteristic of the FGS3 standard single stars (there are different templates for different colors of the targtes, as fringe features change with spectral type), as UP69 the template for intermediate color sources (B-V~0.5). Indeed, deviations from the single star fringes are used to measure double, or multiple, stars projected separations and projected angular diameters. On-- sky separation and position angle are easily derived from these measurements and telescope attitude data (Bernacca et al. 1993 and references therein). Accurate V magnitudes are also derived from the same counts used to construct the fringes and provided by the 4 photomultipliers (two per axis) which detect the photons from the Koester's prisms (Bucciarelli et al. 1994; Bernacca et al. 1995). All targets proposed are particularly suitable for the FGS: their magnitudes, their predicted separations and magnitude differences (in case the double astreroid model is correct), or their predicted angular diameters (in case of single objects; see Tab 1 in the Scientific Justification section) fall within ranges where instrument S/N and resolution would produce astrometric and photometric data of the highest accuracy achieveable: +/- 1 mas in angular separation and better than 0.1 mag in Johnson V (see below for S/N calculations). An upper limit on the angular motion of the minor planets proposed is 0.01"/sec (either in RA or DEC). Therefore, there should be no problem in tracking the targets during the science exposures. We request one visit per target. Following the procedure for the calculation of the number of orbits given in the Cycle 7 Phase I Proposal Instructions volume, each visit comprises a guide star acquisition (8 min), the set--up time (including the selected filter) for TRANS mode (3 min), then the science exposure. Our science exposure consists of 39 TRANS scans of 2^'' on the sky each (i.e., 1^''.5 per FGS axis) sampled every 0.^''0008 (the pixel size per axis is 0.^''0006). Since each sample takes a fixed 0.025 sec, the 39 scans take 40.6 min, for a total of 8+3+40.6 = 51.6 min per visit. This is less than the visibility period per orbit (Phase I Proposal Instructions, Table 2, p.14). Therefore, we request one orbit per target. Recent observations (Lattanzi et al. 1994 and references therein) show that scans with the same pixel size, and through the PUPIL element give optimal resolution. Consecutive scans are required for three reasons. First, spacecraft jitter can corrupt fringes. With multiple scans one can identify jitter--corrupted fringes and reject them. Second, analysis of multiple scans is the only reliable way to check on the repeatibility of a detection and of estimated formal accuracies. Finally, multiple scans are co-- added to increase the signal--to-- noise ratio (S/N). This is crucial for best resolution during the reductions. Successful exposures should yield co--added fringes with typical S/N > 60 for V < 12, and S/N >= 30 for V> 12., begincenter References endcenter Bernacca P.L. et al.: 1993. Real Time Justification ----------------------- If the proposal is accepted, about three months before the HST observations will be performed, we plan to organize worldwide coordinated photometric observing campaigns, in order to obtain complete lightcurves of the program asteroids. From the knowledge of the rotational phase of the lightcurve maxima we will be able to schedule the times of HST observations when the objects forming the eventual binary asteroids will be at the maximum angular distance, as viewed from Earth. In any case we will provide all the necessary data (coordinates, times of suitable rotational phase, etc.) within six weeks before the HST observations.
