Abstract Astrometry at 1-mas accuracy of faint companions to nearby M-dwarfs is the most productive direct method to determine accurate masses of stars near the end of the main sequence. In Cycle 4 we achieved first confirmed detection at visible wavelengths of the astrometric companions of GL 623 and GL 831 with FGS in TRANS mode (Franz et al. 1994). In Cycle 5 we began observations with FGS in POS/TRANS mode in order to determine, with milli-arcsec accuracy, the motions of the individual components relative to proximate reference stars. Such measures will yield component masses free of assumptions and with an expected accuracy of 5 percent. From preliminary FGS results we estimate the mass of GL 831B as 0.12 solar masses and that of GL 623B as 0.10 solar masses, placing both near the stellar/substellar border. While Cycle 6 observations should suffice to define the orbits and mass ratios, the Cycle 7 observations will be necessary and sufficient to separate barycentric, parallactic, and proper motions of the binary components with the 1-mas precision required to yield masses accurate to about 5 percent. Such a mass determination for GL 623B should establish conclusively its nature as star or substellar object. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7491( 4) - 06/19/97 16:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Of the total of 6 orbits, three will be used for each of the two targets. All observations will be carried out with FGS-3 and filter F583W in order to assure continuity with observations already obtained or in progress. This is particularly important in POS mode where we depend on the integrity of the optical field angle distortion calibrations (OFAD) obtained and maintained for FGS-3 only with F583W. Each of three visits (each lasting one orbit) to each target will begin with a POS mode observation of the prime target, followed by one POS mode observation each of up to four reference stars. We will then observe the binary in TRANS mode, making 14 scans (GL 831) of 30 sec duration each (1.2 arcsec length per FGS axis), or 32 scans for GL 623 (1.0 arcsec length per FGS axis). These scan parameters and the resulting total exposures (420 sec for GL 831; 800 sec for GL 623) have produced, for these two targets, Transfer Functions of S/N sufficient to obtain astrometry of 1-mas accuracy. The TRANS observation will be followed by another POS-mode observation of the binary and by reobservation of the reference stars, and by a last observation of the prime target in POS-mode only. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The range of dates and spacecraft orientations specified under Special Requirements for each visit is determined by the availability of reference stars, by the epochs of large parallax factors, and by binary-star orbital phases. Adherence to these special scheduling requirements is therefore essential for achieving the scientific objectives of this project.
