Abstract This is a continuation request for GO 6047/GO 6566. The study utilizes HST-FGS and infrared speckle imaging to calibrate the mass-luminosity relation (MLR) for stars less massive than 0.2 Msun, with special emphasis on objects near the stellar/brown dwarf border. We examine subarcsecond binary systems in order to determine the masses, luminosities, and colors of objects at the lower end of the main sequence, including several objects with M < 0.1 Msun. The payoff of this proposal is high because all 8 of the systems selected have already been be resolved with HST during Cycle 5, and contain many of the reddest objects for which masses can be determined. In addition to contributing to fundamental research on very low mass stars and brown dwarfs, an accurate MLR can be broadly utilized in the fields of spectroscopic, astrometric and cataclysmic binary research, stellar cluster work, planetary searches, and studies of the galactic and ``missing'' mass. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7493( 12) - 03/12/98 15:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Targets will be observed in TRANS mode only, except for GL 22 and its reference stars which will be observed multiple times in POS and TRANS (both modes in the same orbit). A POS mode observation will include multiple runs through the following sequence: target, drift star check, reference stars, target, drift star check. The F583W aperture has been selected because it is currently the best calibrated of the filters available in FGS3. The transfer of the telescope through F583W is already calibrated to the Johnson V band, and will allow the magnitude difference at visible wavelengths to be attained with high accuracy. F583W also has more throughput and greater resolution capability than PUPIL. However, PUPIL may be used in cases where the separation is large enough (> 0.5 arcsec), and the target bright enough (V < 12), to increase the sharpness of the transfer function. This decision relies upon continuing calibration observations using PUPIL. Cycle 5 Update (GO 6047): Of the 11 systems included in the Cycle 5--7 effort, all now have successful Cycle 5 observations acquired and reduced. Ten systems have been clearly resolved. One system, GL 748 AB, is being observed intensively in both TRANS and POS modes in order to map the 2.4 year orbit completely, determine the parallax to 0.5 mas (a factor of five improvement over the ground-based parallax), and measure the fractional mass. The differences between the observed separations and those of the orbital fit are less than two milliarcseconds. This accuracy has never before been achieved for a resolved binary. The position angles are known to better than a tenth of a degree, and the magnitude difference is 1.90 +/- 0.05 mag. This is a powerful demonstration of what FGS3 can do. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Cycle 7 observations are essential because we are mapping the orbital motion of the binaries; without them, the Cycle 5 and Cycle 6 observations will be of little value. Cycle 7 Plan: Six targets -- GL 22, GL 234, GL 469, GL 473, GJ 1215, and GJ 1245 -- will be observed in TRANS mode once each near the end of Cycle 7 in order to determine the separations, position angles, and fractional luminosities of the components (6 orbits). G 250-29 and GJ 2005 will be observed in TRANS mode twice each, near the beginning and end of Cycle 7 (4 orbits). For each of these eight targets, the observations over three HST cycles have been carefully planned to provide points on the orbit every 20-40 degrees. CVZ observations can be made for both GL 22 and G 250-29, and should be used if possible to increase the number of TRANS scans that can be made during an orbit. GL 22 will also be observed in POS mode in an experiment to measure the fractional mass in a long-period system. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Continued LTSTAB observations are essential, given the small numbers of reference stars available for GL 22.
