Abstract We propose to carry out a complete survey of all known galaxy- mass gravitational lens systems (with image separations DeltaTheta <= 10''), by obtaining deep, high- resolution images in the optical and near IR. We request H band observations with NICMOS/NIC2, complemented by WFPC2/PC1 images in the V and I bands where they do not yet exist. Our goals for this survey are to: (1) identify simple lens systems for Hubble's constant estimates; (2) obtain photometric redshifts for the lens galaxies; (3) measure the M/L ratio of lens galaxies; (4) compare the dark matter to the stellar light distribution; (5) probe the interstellar medium in the lens galaxies; and to (6) find as yet undetected lens galxies. With this information, we will address a number of problems central to modern cosmology and galaxy evolution. PLEASE NOTE: This project is a collaboration between two groups, one at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), and the other at the University of Arizona (UA). SAO would like to establish UA as an equal partner to the project, with PI E.Falco and Co-PI C.Impey. Both institutions should have access to the data, and we would like to have notifications sent to: J.Lehar (jlehar@cfa.harvard.edu), C.Impey (impey@as.arizona.edu), E.Falco (efalco@cfa.harvard.edu). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7495( 19) - 01/08/00 17:08 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose NICMOS observations with the F160W filter for all targets, and systems with bright lens galaxies will also be observed in the F205W filter for one third of the time. We expect most lens galaxies to be brighter than H=20, which is expected to give an SNR of 10 per square arcsec in a one orbit NICMOS observation. The critically sampled NIC2 chip will be used, with four dithered exposures separated by 2.5 pixel intervals. This will allow for hot pixel removal and PSF correction, while providing a reasonable field of view. The NICMOS MULTIACCUM mode will be used, with the STEP64 sample sequence. We also propose WFPC2/PC1 observations for those targets where the existing I- and V- band HST data are incomplete. The F814W and/or F555W filters will be used, with the number of orbits assigned depending on the the R magnitude of the lens galaxy. With two orbits, we should be able to detect the faintest known lens at R=25 with a SNR of 10 per square arcsec. Each WFPC2 target will have at least two dithered exposures for the removal of hot pixels and cosmic ray events. PLEASE NOTE: We specify ORIENTs for some of our WFPC2 visits, to prevent quasar diffraction spikes from obscuring the lens galaxy. This results in apparently small scheduling windows. Although we can only specify one ORIENT in RPS2, there are actually four useful ORIENTs for these targets, and we indicate the alternative ORIENTs in the comments to each visit. We request that all four ORIENTs be considered carefully during scheduling, as this will increase the windows up to fourfold. ALSO NOTE: We have modified the NICMOS exposures to more completely fill the assigned orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We plan to continue using ground-based optical telescopes, such as the MMT and NOAO telescopes, for additional photometry, and for follow-up spectroscopy, as required.
