Abstract Recent results from the ground and from HST for different types of dwarf galaxies show that even in these apparently simple stellar systems, a variety of different star formation histories can be found. The star formation rate can be observed to either take place continuously or in several discrete episodes spanning several Gyr. The reasons for these variations are not yet well understood, and they are fundamental to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. Currently, detailed SFHs are available only for Milky Way satellites; a biased sample. To determine SFHs for more distant galaxies with a wider range of properties and environments, CMDs at deep limits are required. We propose a careful study of two of the closest isolated dIs: IC 1613 (660 kpc) and Sextans A (1400 kpc). In this way we can probe IC 1613 down to limits close to the oldest turnoffs (M_V ~ +3.5), and the very metal poor system, Sextans A, down to slightly younger limits (M_V ~ +2). Because of the effects of crowding on ground based observations, this can only be achieved with the HST. One of our main goals will to test the hypothesis that these two galaxies could have been part of the ``faint blue galaxy'' population seen at higher redshifts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7496( 9) - 01/06/99 16:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our primary fields (with WFPC2) will be centered in Sextans A (and cover a good fraction of the optical extent of the galaxy), and lie midway out from the center of IC 1613 (concentrating on populations with ages in excess of 100 Myr). We will observe for 8 orbits in V, 16 orbits in I. This will provide limiting magnitudes of 27.5 and 26.7 in V and I at a S/N of 8. Additionally, we will add one orbit in HAlpha in each galaxy. This will allow us to identify emission line stars and planetary nebulae and estimate contamination from diffuse emission line gas. Team members have a vast amount of experience with photometry and specifically with undersampled HST data. We will use NICMOS in parallel, aligning its field of view with GTO observations scheduled for the outer regions of IC 1613, and with a random halo field in Sextans A. In this way will be able to search for cool luminous stars (e.g. AGB stars) in the H band in the infrared. We will also use the STIS in CCD imaging mode to obtain very deep imaging in a parallel field. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Team members Gallagher and Tolstoy have observing time on the WIYN telescope in September and November to conduct optical imaging in support of this project. A deep multi-color mosaic will be constructed of IC 1613 in September and similar observations of Sextans A will be obtained in November. Skillman has time allocated on the Calar Alto 3.5m with the twin spectrograph to obtain improved nebular abundances (and to search for any possible abundance variations) in Sextans A.
