Abstract We propose to continue our calibration experiment for M(max) of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) by determining Cepheid distances to their parent galaxies. To date we have completed the calibration for 6 SNe Ia, from Cycles 1, and 3 -- 5. The results for 5 SNe Ia have been published in extenso. A letter on the sixth SN Ia, SN 1990N, has also been published; the full archive paper will be submitted by Nov. 1, 1996. HST observations of NGC 3627 (SN 1989B), originally scheduled for 1996, have been postponed to 1997. The experiment is designed to determine the mean absolute magnitude M(max) in B and V of SNe Ia and to test the possible dependence of their luminosities on secondary parameters. To adequately do this we need the calibration of additional SNe Ia with modern photometry and lying in galaxies of different Hubble type. We request 4 * 34 orbits (+ 4 orbits for a feasibility test) over a three-year interval (cycles 7 -- 9) for the two-color photometry of the Cepheids in four target galaxies (two orbits each for 12 in one case 13 epochs in F555W and two orbits each for 5 in one case 6 epochs in F814W). The four galaxies are, in order of preference, NGC 4527 (SN 1991T, cycle 7), NGC 3370 (SN 1994ae, cycle 8), NGC 1316 (SNe 1980N and 1981D, cycles 7 and 8), and NGC 4419 (SN 1984A, cycle 9). Their five SNe Ia are well observed and fulfill the condition (B-V)_max < 0(m)20 to guard against peculiarities and internal absorption. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7504( 8) - 05/14/99 10:09 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Observations will be carried out with the WFPC2. Properly time spaced observations spanning a period of about 2 months in the V band will be required. A special timing scheme has been specified, which provides maximum detection completeness and phase coverage for Cepheids with periods form 15 to 70 days, and minimizes aliassing problems with period determination. This makes a total of 12 epochs or visits to each galaxy. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY MINIMALIST approach: reducing the number of epochs from this level or altering the timing scheme significantly will introduce aliassing, and incur the risk of obtaining incorrect periods. Each epoch in V (or I) is a pair of back to back orbits, utilizing the orbit duration to the fullest, which results in effective exposure times of 4000s or a little more. The limiting magnitude is thus 28 in V (F555W), and Cepheids with mean magnitudes V < 27.5 can be detected. These numbers are empirical determinations from Cycle 4 and 5 data. This means that Cepheids with periods longer than 10 days can be detected at distance moduli up to 31.6, and those with P > 20 days can be found to distance moduli of 32.2. In addition there are exploratory images of NGC1316. This is only one visit, but the results from this visit will determine whether a Cepheid search in NGC1316 is feasible in a future cycle. The ORIENT restrictions for this target ANTICIPATE the same ORIENT restrictions that will be necessary if a Cepheid search is eventually conducted on this target, and to ensure that the data obtained here are at very similar ORIENT as the future set. Real Time Justification ----------------------- 1) Timing - Observations need to be conducted at the planned time intervals to ensure adequate coverage of the Cepheids' light curves. 2) Orientation - it is highly desirable (but not essential) to keep the field orientation the same over most of the observing period. The natural telescope roll angle for a given target changes with observation epoch. Hence the time of year for observations should be chosen to provide the maximum range for off-nominal roll angles so that the field orientation is kept the same over the maximum permissible span of dates. Such accomodation has been possible in previous cycles.
