Abstract We propose to use HST to obtain photometry of 35 distant SNe Ia at redshifts 0.45 < z < 1.0 over three years, producing a precise Hubble diagram from which we can measure cosmic deceleration and global curvature of the universe. Our team has gathered a large sample of nearby SNe Ia and has demonstrated that SNe Ia can provide accurate relative distances to objects at these redshifts, free of systematic effects caused by reddening, Malmquist bias, K-corrections, and evolution. HST can make an essential contribution by providing photometry with substantially higher precision and better temporal coverage than can be obtained from the ground. Our group has independently developed methods for the rapid identification of high redshift supernova candidates at z ~ 0.5, discovering 20 high -z objects in the past year, and will be instituting even higher redshift searches in the coming year. We follow up our discoveries within 48 hours with photometry and spectroscopy to classify the objects and measure their redshifts, enabling us to quickly select suitable HST targets. Simulations demonstrate that for maximum efficiency we should observe each SN at 6 epochs during the 25 days following maximum light, and then obtain an image of the host galaxies after the SN has faded for accurate galaxy subtraction. This observing program will allow us to measure q_0 to better than Sigma = 0.1, and enable us to separate the effects of curvature and deceleration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7505( 20) - 08/10/99 16:35 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to obtain a series of seven observations of newly discovered high-z Type Ia supernovae. Each observation will be one orbit of WFPC2 imaging for each target. (This for visits beginning Feb '98, those in April '98 will be directed at z = 1 SN and include 3 orbits of NIMCOS on most visits.) Our cycle 7 orbit allocation will be split into 2 groups. The First group will use 24 orbits for following 4 z ~0.5 sne discovered in Jan 1998. The second group we plan on following 2 Z ~1 sne. We plan on informing STScI on Tuesday Jan 27 with the exact positions of the SN for the first z = 0.5 set.. We plan on informing STScI on Tuesday March 31 '98 for the second set. The first series of WFPC2 observations needs to be spaced out during the next 54 days in the following pattern. We would like the first observation at the earliest feasible time, then the second observation to follow the first by 6-10 days, followed by another at 12-17 days after the first epoch, then 26 - 32 days, 44 - 54 days, and finally 345-385 days after the first observation. (We have compromised on the following table for the Jan/Feb observations.) IF POSSIBLE, WE WOULD ALWAYS LIKE THE OBSERVATIONS IN EVERY WINDOW FOR EACH VISIT IN A SERIES TO GO AS EARLY IN THEIR RESPECTIVE WINDOWS AS POSSIBLE. We have added the special requirement SCHEDulability 100% to the first 3 visits. We are willing to trade visibility for schedulability when the Supernovae are bright. Note that the 4 fields to be observed Feb '98 have targets SN1998[A, B, C, D]1. If at least a single guide star can be used then the leading visits for each target should be selected. Visits in blocks of 6 cover each target. (As of 5 March we're withdrawn the last four visits on A1 (visits 3-6, and 46 and 66 for C1 and D1.) The two fields to be observed in April '98 have names SN1998[E, F], additionally there are two targets to be with appended "star" within two arcminutes of these two SN to be offset targets for calibration. On 1 June '98 we have submitted two sets of placeholder visits to account for 12 unused orbits as a result of withdrawing visits 33-36 in April '98. These visits are ON HOLD pending revision based on definition of ground search plans, and must not be executed in the form submitted today. On 3 Dec. '98 we have updated the Phase II program to enter correct field center coordinates for the two new supernovae to be observed starting February 1999. We have also restored Visit no. 46 from an earlier version of the plans in order to obtain a +1 year visit on SN1998C1. For each of the new SN there will be 7 visits planned: 1999A1: visits 51-57; 1999A2: visits 71-77. These are both to start between Feb 1-4, '99, with nominal repeat dates of 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 days, and one year. The program is initially submitted with visits 57, and 77 (Feb. 2000 execution) commented out, since RPS2 V7.4 would not schedule these, even if marked as on hold -- we will restore these after completion of 51-56 and 71-76. Real Time Justification ----------------------- A SNe search will take place at CTIO 23/24 Jan '98. Keck time 24/25 Jan '98 will provide spectroscopic determination of newly discovered SNe. By Tuesday, 27 January '98 at 8:00am EST STScI (via email from R. Gilliland to Lucas, vanorsow, patterson, stefano) will provide notice of final positions -- the positions in Dec '97 submission are just defaults of search field centers. For April the CTIO search nights are 24-25 March '98 with Keck spectroscopy on 25- 26 March. Notice will be given STScI by 8:00am EST 31 March. For the February '99 observations the SNe search at CTIO is scheduled for January 12/13 '99 with Keck spectroscopy over Jan 17-21, '99. Notice of the precise coordinates for SN1999A1 and SN1999A2 will be given to STScI by 4:00pm EST 25 January 1999.
