Abstract Since the discovery of its circumstellar disk of dust and gas 10 years ago, \bp is a unique laboratory for the study of extrasolar planetary systems. Various observations of its dust and gas have enabled to improve our knowledge of the system; they have shown in particular that comets and may be also planets could be present around the star. However, the evolutionary status of the global system gas+dust still remains unclear. Also, the evolutionary status of the star itself is still controversial. , We propose to observe \bp with the STIS echelle mode to further test 1) the comet hypothesis as an explanation of the spectroscopic variability, 2) the origin of the stable circumstellar gas, and 3) the evolutionary status of the star itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7512( 10) - 10/24/97 14:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to make STIS echelle spectra in the 1624Angstrom to 3150Angstrom range, with the E230H. The range will be scanned with the six prime settings given in the STIS Instrument Handbook p 226 in order to cover the full spectral range of the grating. , The following table gives UV continuum fluxes at the central wavelength of each scan setting and the observing time required to achieve a Signal- to-Noise of 50, assuming a flat continuum and that both sky background and the detector dark current are negligible. beginflushleft begintabular|c||c||c||c| Central Wavelength & Flux (erg/cm^2/s/Angstrom) & S/N & Exp. Time (mn) , 1763 Angstrom & 5.5 10^-11 & 30 & 30 , 2013 Angstrom & 8.0 10^-11 & 30 & 7 , 2263 Angstrom & 6.0 10^-11 & 30 & 5 , 2513 Angstrom & 5.0 10^ -11 & 30 & 3.2 , 2762 Angstrom & 7.0 10^-11 & 30 & 1.1 , 3012 Angstrom & 8.0 10^-11 & 30 & 1.1 , endtabular endflushleft Taking into account the visibility period of the star and the various overheads described in STIS Instrument Handbook, we need 2 orbits to cover the 1624 --3150 Angstrom range. , In order to get temporal informations on the variable lines, to be compared to the simulations, we propose to repeat the whole set of observations. So in total we ask for 4 orbits. , Note 1) : The UV fluxes are measured in IUE or GHRS data and the exposure times computed with the available STIS calculator. , Note 2): According to table 13.24 revised which gives Mama bright object limits, with a magnitude of 3.8, assuming a 0 exctinction, the bp observations with STIS is too bright to be observed without a density filter. This is probably due to the assumption of 0 extinction. In any case, the measured fluxes are a much better estimate of the reality, and so we rely on them. This was checked with STIS specialists. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Observations should preferably be done between Nov and Jan. (see section 15) We will perform simultaneous ground based monitoring of the CaII variability during the STIS observations, as we did during GHRS ones. This requires observations from a few sites in the Southern Hemisphere : Chile, Australia, South Africa. Our experience has shown that it was quite feasible to organize such campaigns. To observe bp from the ground, one needs to observe between November and January.
