Abstract We propose a set of observations of emission-line diagnostics of the Orion Nebula, the brightest and best-resolved H II region. The major goal is to provide reliable elemental abundances in this benchmark of the ISM. Currently, Orion is one of a number of nebulae for which large differences in heavy element abundances are deduced from the bright forbidden lines and the much fainter recombination lines. The existence of large temperature fluctuations is one possible reason for this discrepancy; other less explored reasons include density and ionization fluctuations. Our long-slit observations with STIS cross prominent arcs associated with an HH object, a proplyd, and the Bar -- an ionization front viewed edge-on. These are the places where the effects of mechanical energy deposition into the H II region would be easiest to detect. The combination of spectral lines studied is designed to measure density, temperature, and ionic structure and their variations, and then to determine what influence they have on the inference of abundances. Analysis depends on accurate removal of the effects of foreground extinction. Proposed Palpha imagery combined with our existing H Beta images is required to put this on a secure footing. Other major goals of this program are confirmation of a serious problem discovered in our earlier HST spectra concerning the theoretical decrement of the ultraviolet He 1 lines and validation of the analysis methods commonly used on the fainter extragalactic H II regions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7514( 83) - 12/04/01 19:47 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have 3 parts to the proposed program -- primary observations with STIS and NICMOS are 2 of these. The third is parallel coordinated WFPC2 and/or NICMOS with the STIS & NICMOS primaries. STIS Long-slit Spectra---------------------- We will use HST's spatial resolution to map changes in conditions across the nebula. As shown in the Figure, our slit positions are chosen to cross several features, including arcs associated with HH objects, proplyds (O'Dell & Wen 1994), and the Orion Bar. We will acquire data for all lines along the 52" slits, except for G140M & G230M (MAMA) which will see only the inner 28". STIS spectra are to be taken with an 0.5" slit width, except for four spectra with an 0.2" slit width. Thus no target peakup is required. Slit 1 passes through the position 1SW which we observed with FOS and GHRS in Cycle 5. This slit also passes through proplyd 159-350. Slit 2 is designed to pass through position x2 observed with FOS in Cycle 5. x2 is located in one of the most prominent arcs in the O III WFPC2 images. By including 1SW and x2 here, there will be a cross comparison with our data from Cycle 5 giving the ability to verify important new findings from our earlier work as described above. This slit is parallel slit 1, which allows an enormous saving in overhead (OH). Because we need to have many grating tilt settings, which have substantial OH, taking spectra for slit 1 and 2 before changing the grating wheel saves much accumulated time. The distance between slit centers is 18"; hence the OH is only ~1 min. per pair of spectra. The helpdesk has estimated that return to the same position should be within 0.03", which is tolerable for our work -- all (except four) with 0.5" slit width. Slit 4 crosses the Orion Bar. The observations will track the change in ionization and T_e as the gas leaves the cool PDR and flows into the main H II region. This interface is expected to be affected by shocks, instabilities, and possibly magnetic interactions. Our spectral diagnostics will probe the interface itself, and its effects on the global emission. The southern tip passes through HH203. This slit is oriented to point toward Theta^1 Ori C (the dominant exciting star), which also places it orthogonal to the Bar. Slit 5 passes through a very bright, sharply-defined "rim" of the Bar, (where a positional bifurcation begins). This feature shows much better on other of our HST imagery, which space precludes including. The slit is parallel to slit 4 in order to take advantage of the same OH savings as is the case for slits 1 & 2. Distance between centers of slits 4 & 5 is ~32". STIS Observing Program: For all slits we plan to use G750M, G430M, and G230M (MAMA), with various Prime Tilts generally (we use two Secondary Tilts also) to cover the necessary lines as described below (many other detectable lines in the bands are not listed). The grouping for slits 2, 4, & 5 provides complete coverage for the science with the N^+ and O^+ lines. G750M: 5448--6020: N II 5755, Cl III 5519, 5539, He I 5876,; 6295--6867: O I 6302, 6365, S III 6314, N II 6548, 6584, H Alpha, He I 6678, S II 6716, 6731 6997--7569: Ar III 7135, O II 7321-32 The STIS/ETC gives a resolution of 5.0 Angstrom, sufficient to resolve the above lines. G430M: 3022--3308: He I 3188 (n=4); 3537--3823: O II 3726, 3729, and H10 3799 to H15 3712 and higher. The resolution is 2.8 A, insufficient to resolve the O II pair. Thus we take 2 short exposures with slit-width 0.2" to resolve these. Two of these displaced 0.1" to each side in the dispersion direction will cover 80% of larger slit width. The 0.2" observations are in slits 1 and 4 only. 4308--4594: O III 4363, H Gamma, He I 4471; 4818--5104: H Beta, O III 4959, 5007; G230M: 2131--2221: N II 2139.68, 2143.45; 2454--2545: O II 2471 The resolution is 1.5 A, sufficient to resolve the N II pair. For slit 1, the line fluxes are generally highest. We add 1 G140M band and 3 more G230M bands to cover the doubly ionized lines and He. G140M: 1638--1692: O III 1661, 1666; G230M: 1839--1929: Si III 1883, 1892, C III 1907, 1909 2695--2783: He I 2697 (n=9), 2724 (n=8), 2765 (n=7); 2933--3021: He I 2946 (n=5). Sample Calculation -- From GHRS measurements at 1SW of O II 2471, we have 1.13E-13 erg/cm^2 s (square)". The resolution for G230M is 1.53 Angstrom (product of dispersion of 0.09 A per pixel and 17 pixels in dispersion direction -- according to ETC). Thus line flux is 7.39E-14 erg/cm^2 s Angstrom (square)". From ETC for 120 s, the S/N = 4.4 per pixel for this line. For our faintest lines, we intend to build up S/N by binning data along the slit. The requirement to separate CCD and MAMA exposures means there are more Visits than envisioned in phase I. The same field of view is used in Visits 1 and 2 which permit SAVE OFFSET 12 and USE OFFSET 12. Similarly the same field of view is used in Visits 4 and 5 (using slits 4 & 5), which permit SAVE OFFSET 45 and USE OFFSET 45. NICMOS Images------------- We have modified our original program in view of the focus problems with NIC3 to one that uses NIC2. ** Present Visit 6 ** We will observe at three adjacent positions with NIC2 primary using POS TARG. This will cover a rectangle that is 19.2" x 54.6". The long axis is parallel slit 1 and 2. It is to be 5" above and 14.2" below the slit 1 axis (as measured perpendicular slit 1). In order to cover the positions 1SW, x2, and the proplyd 159-340 as well as the desired interesting features in the Orion Nebula (mainly) below these slits, we have specified a space craft ORIENT of 339.935D, the same as needed for STIS Visits 1 and 2. By using the ORIENT requirement, the desired rectangle is defined. The pattern moves from the NW to the SE along a PA of 114.935D, so that we are moving along the +Y axis of the NIC camera. We then use POS TARG to do the mosaic. **According to STScI Daniele Calzetti, POS TARG refers to sky movement and not telescope movement & that our large 17.7" moves must have a negative sign** We have entered the center position of our first frame NGC1976-NIC assuming the pattern starts at the NW end (on the right) and moves toward the SE (toward the left). For an expected F(P_alpha) = 2E-13 erg/cm^2 s (square)" and a time of ~350 sec, S/N ~ 40 per pixel from NICMOS/ETC. ============================================================= Coordinated parallels:---------------------- WFPC2 (with STIS): We have successfully operated in this mode augmenting CoI O'Dell's Orion imagery program. Serendipity positions will be observed with several WFPC2 filters at NO additional HST time. These observations will extend the Orion mosaic done with F656N, F658N, F502N, and F547M into new parts of the nebula. This type of mapping of Orion has been very fruitful in finding new and interesting objects, such as the proplyds of both the emission-line and extinction variety, various shock structures of low and high ionization, etc. When we find that the region covered by the WFPC2 parallel FOV has already been done in the basic four filters, then we will use other filters that offer additional astrophysical information. Our general priority would be to do F673N, F953N, F487N, and F631N, in that order. NIC1 parallels (with NIC2 primaries): The NIC1 parallels trail the NIC2 primaries as we form our rectangular 3-step mosaic moving in the +Y direction. This has been checked by Daniele Calzetti. Thus the NIC1 that is parallel with the THIRD NIC2 FOV3 is within the 1st NIC2 FOV1. Rather than repeat F187N/F190N in an area already covered by the NIC2 primary coverage, we do NIC1(F108N/F113N) parallels for FOV3 to obtain continuum subtracted He I 10830, instead of the NIC1(F187N/F190N) parallels we do for FOV1 and FOV2. The reason is that for the parallel FOVs that cover new real estate, we use F187N/F190N because in combination with our existing WFPC2 H_beta imagery, we will have more area to do our extinction science. We REQUIRE NIC3 be turned off because it will be too out of focus to be useful plus the data accumulation causes unacceptable excess overhead. These parallel programs will use NO additional HST time. ========== The position angles of our 4 slits dictate a specific ORIENT. For slit 1 and 2, ORIENT = 339.935D. This is needed for Visits 1, 2, and 6. It is necessary to use the visit level special requirements SCHED in order to have an adequate window in Cycle 7. This template uses SCHED = 80%, which provides windows of 24 days for visits 1 & 2. If required for scheduling in this 21 Nov. - 22 Dec. 1998 window, we could alter the program to use SCHED = 90%, which adds 5 more days (10 - 15 Dec. 1998) to above windows for the visits. For slit 4 and 5, ORIENT = 4.448D. This is needed for Visits 4 and 5. Again, we use SCHED = 80% to provide a 22 & 25 day window for visits 4 & 5 respectively. If required for scheduling in this 4 Dec. 1998 - 3 Jan. 1999 window, we could alter the program to use SCHED = 90%, which adds 5 more days (10 - 15 Dec. 1998) to above windows for the visits. We note that removal of SCHED (default 30%) provides windows of 12 and 15 days for visits 4 & 5 respectively. This would provide an additional useful 1 min 25 sec/orbit compared with SCHED = 80%. We do not expect STScI to be able to put some of our program on such specific dates but mention it. Who knows? Real Time Justification ----------------------- Because the O III] 1666 A line is very important for the goals of this program, it is highly desirable to have the same slit coverage as for the other emission lines. Because the G140M spectrum will be projected 3 arcsec BELOW the repeller wire and thus asymmetric with respect to our other slit fields (Cycle 8, phase II update, pp. 8-9), we seek to "recover" 3 arcsec Y-axis shift (along the slit length). We believe the best way to do this is with POS TARG to be used only for our G140M exposures. ** Please provide help with this aspect in order that we adjust the positions in the correct direction relative to the other spectra. ** To the extent possible, this program will benefit from knowing ahead of time what the MONTHLY SHIFT in the MAMA spectral Offsetting (STIS HB, vers. 2.0, p. 115) will be. We can then quickly adjust our slit definitions to compensate for changes. It is very important that we try to keep proper registration of slits as illustrated in our color image in the original proposal and between our MAMA and CCD exposures. IT IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT TO INSURE THAT THE TWO FIDUCIAL BARS DO NOT COVER PARTS OF THE NEBULA THAT ARE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO THIS STUDY. Thus our program would benefit by having NO change in the MONTHLY SHIFT in the MAMA spectral Offsetting between Visits 61 and 62. In 2001, our scheduling window is Nov./Dec., 2001. Hopefully, in the normal scheduling of HST, NO change in the MONTHLY SHIFT in the MAMA spectral Offsetting would be due to occur between our two visits.
