Abstract We propose to acquire UV-optical STIS spectra and WFPC2 imagery of the wind-blown Bubble Nebula NGC 7635. This object is significant to our understanding of galactic chemical evolution, star formation (possibly triggered by radiative implosion), the mass-loss history of precursors to supernovae, the effect of wind-driven shocks on the ISM and the process of ionization and photoevaporation of high density knots (possibly HH objects) in the presence of an intense stellar wind and radiation field. The ener getic environment of NGC 7635 is more extreme and its features have evolved on a different time scale than in more quiescent objects studied with HST (e.g. Orion and M16). HST is essential to our study in order to achieve high spatial resolution and ac cess to the UV region of the spectrum. The nebula's nearly spherical shell is the result of a recent ( < 10^6 years) stellar mass-loss event and is the best young, clearly observed bubble available for study. We will exam in e the ionization front at the r im of the bubble, the extent to which it is shock- driven and the scale of the photoevaporative flow off the face of the molecular cloud. We will resolve high density knots down to a size of 2.1 x 10^15 cm (140 au), searching for protostellar objects. STIS U V spectra will allow us to calculate the first accurate C/H abundance in the Perseus arm and test for the presence of a galactic abundance gradient. Finally, with our HST data we will compare our observational results with our radiative shock-model predi ctions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7515( 20) - 07/28/99 10:27 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ ****NOTE CHANGE OF COORDINATES AND ORIENT IN JUNE/JULY 1998 IN ORDER TO COMPLETE OBSERVATIONS IN SPRING 1999 NEW ORIENT IS 306+/- 5 **** Our primary WFPC2 imagery will be taken at an ORIENT=197 (+/-8) degrees as shown in Figure 1 in order to capture the m ost important features at the highest spatial resolution. We will observe through filters centered on the important diagnostic lines of HAlpha, HBeta, OIIILambda5007, NIILambda6583, SIILambda6724 and the continuum region at Lambda5470. At each wavelength we have a long and short exposure (each CR-SPLIT). The long exposures will allow us to obtain deep imagery of the low surface brightness features while the short exposures will not saturate the brightest parts of the nebula. The long exposures will be s et to a gain of 7 to improve s/n of the fainter regions of the nebula and the short exposures to a gain of 14 to increase the dynamic range. All images will be binned 1x1 on the chip except HBeta which will be binned 2x2 i n order to acquire the exposures i n a reasonable amount of time. Because of the importance of HBeta to our understanding of the extinction and ionization structure, the slight loss of resolution is worth the large gain in useful science. Since we have specified an ORIENT, our orbital visibi lity time is limited to 56 minutes. We will expose one of our short-long pairs through one filter only on each of four of the orbits, and on the fifth orbit acquire the exposures through the remaining two filters. The determination of saturation for each long exposure was based on the surface brightness values in the nebula from our ground-based imagery. We will observe with the 52x0.2 STIS longslit at two positions, the brightest knots to the west of BD+60^degrees2522 at an ORIENT=161 (+/-10) degrees an d perpendicular to the brightest portion of the bubble rim at ORIENT=80 +/-25 degrees. Since these two positions are at different ORIENTs, they will be acquired on separate visits, but their acquisition sequence will be the same. WE NOTE THAT OUR ORIGINA L PL A N CALLED FOR 1 VISIT TO THE KNOTS WHICH WOULD HAVE CONSISTED OF 4 STIS/CCD AND 2 NUV- MAMA ORBITS. HOWEVER, THE PHASE II SUBMISSION WAS MODIFIED AS REQUIRED TO PLACE THE NUV-MAMA ORBITS AS A SEPARATE VISIT FROM THE STIS/CCD VISIT. The STIS TARGET ACQUISI TION will be as follows: (1) Guide star acq, (2) Target Acq. using STIS/CCD with Neu on BD+60^degrees2522 which is a V=8.7 O6.5IIIf star, (3) An Acq Peakup with the 0.2" slit, STEP 3 WILL BE DROPPED AS OF AUG 15, 1997, SINCE PC INFORMED PI THAT VERIFICAT ION TESTS SHOW THAT ACQ/PEAKS ARE NOT USEFUL FOR 0.2" OR WIDER SLITS (4) Offset ~30" to a diffuse source. The overhead on the first orbit at each STIS position will be: 9^m(gs acq) + 8^m(target acq) + 5^m(acq peakup) + 1^m(offset) + 5^m(first spec) + 1^m( CRSPLIT=2) = 29^m (TOTAL). For subsequent orbits, there will be an overhead of 6^m(gs reacq) + 5^m(grat tilt/change) + 2^m(CRSPLIT=4) = 13^m (TOTAL); or, for no grating change only 8^m of overhead. The combined over head for the two NUV- MAMA orbits: 12^m(2 g s reacq) + 8^m(first exp) + 2 x 4^m(extra wavecal) = 28^m. ACQ and ACQ/PEAK calculations for STIS were calculated using the ETC. The ETC ID numbers are included for reference in the comments section of the ACQ and ACQ/PEAK exposure log. The spectral reso lution of the 52x0.2 slit will be adequate for our needs at the rim and knots for the STIS/CCD observations. However, we will use the 52x.0.5 slit for the NUV-MAMA observations and the 52x2 slit for the parallel STIS/CCD observations which are in a reg ion of lower surface brightness. All STIS/CCD and NUV-MAMA observations at all positions will be binned 4x4 in the spatial direction to and 1x1 in the dispersion direction. We will observe with G750M at two tilts in the red (5448- 6020, 6295-6867) in order to get sufficient spectral resolution of important diagnostic lines of NII, H and SII. In the blue we will observe with G430L (2900-5700), which will provide sufficient resolution for our important lines of OII, H, and OIII . In the UV we will u se the STIS/ N UV-MAMA with G230L (1570-3180) which will provide sufficient spectral resolution for lines of O and C. At the bubble rim we will observe for only two orbits to capture the strongest lines in the optical. Since the longslit will run across the bubble and r im, we will be able to subtract off the nebular contribution, leaving the shock enhanced line ratios useful to our modeling. S/N ratios were calculated as described in Chapter 6 of the STIS Instrument Handbook (Version 1.0, June 1996) and with the WWW STI S exposure calculator. In the optical we used existing ground-based spectra for our surface brightness values. For our UV exposures we had no available UV fluxes, the nebular spectra of NGC 7635 in the IUE archives are underexposed. So, we used our FOS Cycle 3 spectra from Orion. We found the Orion position which most closely matched our knot in NGC 7635 in its T_e value and O^+/H^+ and O^++/H^+ ratio (using LambdaLambda3727, 5007 and H Beta). We correcte d the line ratios for the extincti on at each locati on in both nebulae and used the CII and CIII to H Beta ratios Lambda2326/H Beta Lambda1909/H Beta, respectively, from the Orion data to calculate the expected Finally, during all primary observations we intend to conduct parallel observations with the two instruments which are not primary at the time. Therefore, all three of the instruments, WFPC2, NICMOS and STIS, will be used either as primary or parallel during all 13 orbits. All 3 NICMOS cameras will be used with filters centered on emission line s of SIII, FeII and H_2 (with corresponding continuum images) to search for shock-excited gas on the face of the molecular cloud. STIS/CCD with 52x2 slit will observe in parallel at 5 different grating tilts -- one for each primary orbit of WFPC2 Real Time Justification ----------------------- NONE We have excellent seeing-limited (~2" ) ground-based, CCD imagery of NGC 7635 in the emission lines H Alpha, H Beta, OIIILambda5007, NIILambda6583 and SIILambda6724 and corresponding continuum images. Additionally we have longslit spectra across th e nebula covering the wavelength region from 4000-7000 Angstrom which give us additional weak diagnostic lines such as the temperature sensitive OIII line at Lambda4363. We will acquire additional ground-based photometry of CAS OB2 in order to rederive the distance to NGC 7635 and the IUE archives contain good S/N high and low dispersion UV spectra of BD+60^degrees2522 for our modeling.
