6. Abstract

The most sensitive images of field galaxies currently recorded with HST include the
Hubble Deep Field (HDF) and the Young Galaxy Survey (YGS). Such images offer a
unique opportunity to study galaxies at intermediate redshifts in a range of
wavelengths corresponding to the near-UV to the R-band in their rest frames. We will
produce and analyse a photometric atlas of the ~ 60 brightest well-resolved galaxies
in each of the 4 colors recorded in the HDF, and ~ 30 galaxies in the somewhat-less-
deep 3-color field of YGS. These galaxies have angular sizes ranging from 2'' to
9'', and therefore contain 100-2000 resolution elements in several photometric
bands. For each galaxy the atlas will contain an image, the radial distributions of
light and color in the each photometric band, a table of photometric parameters, and
notes on the morphology and classification. The atlas will provide a rich and
unbiased sample of galaxies at an evolutionary stage about 50\ be a vital link in
the comparison of present day galaxies (z << 0.1) with primordial galaxies (z > 3).
As time and budget permit we will analyse the atlas galaxies to compare their
photometric properties, stellar content, metallicity, and star -formation activity
to galaxies in the local universe.
