6. Abstract

We propose to use lensed background galaxies for reconstructing the mass
distribution of galaxy clusters observed with WFPC2 We do this by minimizing the
statistical difference between the properties of de-lensed galaxies of our inversion
and those of typical field galaxies, observed in the same filters with HST and
degraded to the same depth as the cluster image. In this way every pixel of
information is made use of in the image. Our technique is made feasible with the
deep HST images because individual background galaxies are numerous and well
resolved.
