Abstract We propose to analyze 80 B,V,I WFPC2 frames (GTO 5090, GO5449) that cover the deep survey region (``Groth strip'') to study the evolution of faint field galaxies. Our approach will be to extract detailed structural information, in addition to morphology, for very faint (I <~ 25^m) field galaxies. The WFPC2 bands will provide colors with high spatial resolution so that we can characterize the evolution of the bulge, disk, nucleus, and other components separately. The Groth strip is ideally matched to the FOV of the Keck 10-m faint object spectrographs, which allow multi- slit observations of 30-75 targets at a single pointing. Existing Keck observations of the Groth strip have already yielded redshifts, emission line ratios, metallicity and age indices, velocity widths or rotation curves for over 200 galaxies. The targets are as faint as I ~ 24.5 and have typical redshifts z ~ 1, well beyond current non-Keck limits for field galaxies. The Keck velocity width and rotation curve data, coupled with the HST sizes, yield masses and thus an unprecedented opportunity to exploit the fundamental plane and the Tully-Fisher relations to establish the degree of luminosity evolution. Our team has extensive experience and tools for analyzing the HST images, and plan to continue to use Keck for acquiring the vital spectroscopic data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Media: ELECTRONIC Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7532( 1) - 12/14/96 00:39 - [ 1] Summary Form for Proposal 7532 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scientific Category COSMOLOGY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
