6. Abstract

We propose to obtain small-scale structural information on 24 Brightest Cluster
Galaxies (BCGs) with 0.17<z<0.9 that have been observed with WFPC2. We will
determine surface brightness slopes at small radii (r<10 kpc or r< 2") to test
whether the BCG metric luminosity - surface brightness slope (L_m - Alpha) relation
has evolved in shape and dispersion since z~0.05. Also, we can use the derived L_m -
Alpha relation to correct \Mbcg\ and determine the homogeneity of this class of
galaxies. This unique data set will also allow us for the first time to test the
core radius - surface brightness relation as a function of redshift which assuming
scaling laws are time invariant, tests the evolution of the stellar population.
These tests will help determine the role of dynamical evolution in BCGs over
lookback times of ~8-10 Gyr. Eleven BCGs have observations in more than one filter
allowing detailed colour studies.
