Abstract This cycle 6 DD program is the first step in a program that will be pursued in Cycle 7 and beyond to use HST to obtain photometry of 35 distant SNe Ia at redshifts 0.45 < z < 1.0, producing a precise Hubble diagram from which we can measure cosmic deceleration and global curvature of the universe. Our team has gathered a large sample of nearby SNe Ia and has demonstrated that SNe Ia can provide accurate relative distances to objects at these redshifts, free of systematic effects caused by reddening, Malmquist bias, K-corrections, and evolution. HST can make an essential contribution by providing photometry with substantially higher precision and better temporal coverage than can be obtained from the ground. Our group has independently developed methods for the rapid identification of high redshift supernova candidates at z ~ 0.5, discovering 20 high-z objects in the past year, and will be instituting even higher redshift searches in the coming year. We follow up our discoveries within 48 hours with photometry and spectroscopy to classify the objects and measure their redshifts, enabling us to quickly select suitable HST targets. Simulations demonstrate that for maximum efficiency we should observe each SN at 6 epochs during the 43 days following maximum light, and then obtain an image of the host galaxies after the SN has faded for accurate galaxy subtraction. This observing program will allow us to measure q_0 to better than Sigma = 0.1, and enable us to separate the effects of curvature and deceleration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7588( 8) - 05/19/98 14:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to obtain a series of seven observations of newly discovered high-z Type Ia supernovae. Each observation will be one orbit of WFPC2 imaging for each target. Our cycle 6 GO/DD allocation is 28 orbits: enough for 7 epochs of observations of up to 4 supernovae. Because our ground-based search for high-z supernovae will take place at the beginning of May, we will be informing STScI on Monday-Tuesday, May 5th-6th, about the coordinates of these Targets of Opportunity. The targets will be found in the region RA = 13H +/- 4H, DEC = 0D +/- 20D. The series of WFPC2 observations needs to be spaced out during the next 43 days in the following pattern. We would like the first observation at the earliest feasible time, then the second observation to follow the first by 1-3 days, followed by another at 4-7 days after the first epoch, then 10 - 14 days, 19-24 days, 34-43 days and finally 345-385 days after the first observation. (We have compromised on the following table for the May observations.) IF POSSIBLE, WE WOULD ALWAYS LIKE THE OBSERVATIONS IN EVERY WINDOW FOR EACH VISIT IN A SERIES TO GO AS EARLY IN THEIR RESPECTIVE WINDOWS AS POSSIBLE. We have added the special requirement SCHEDulability 100% to the first 4 visits. We are willing to trade visibility for schedulability when the Supernovae are bright. We understand the distruptive nature of TOO programs on the HST schedule. If we can not get into the current SMS following notification for visits #1,#2, then the next SMS would be acceptable. We would like to discuss this issue further with the scheduling group. Up to 4 TOO targets will be requested in the first week of May, 1997, if they meet our criteria of age, type, and redshift, and if the HST schedule can accommodate those TOO's. Note: Current program written 17-April-97 based upon discussion with Ray Lucas and Alan Patterson as described in e-mail from Lucas of about 3 April '97. Real Time Justification ----------------------- A SNE search will take place at CFHT at the end of April. There is Keck time a the beginning of May for spectroscopic determination of the newly discovered SNE. On Monday-Tuesday, May 5th-6th we will be in a position to inform STScI about the positions of our Targets of Opportunity. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- By May 1997, we will have a list of at least 28 high redshift galaxies which have had supernovae.
