Abstract The program will observe Jupiter for two HST orbits to look for lightning. The PC will be used with the narrow band H-alpha filter to maximize the contrast between transient lightning flashes and the background reflected sunlight. This will follow up earlier Voyager and Galileo detections of lightning and demonstrate the HST capability to study the phenomenon systematlically. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Because we are looking for single pixel, faint, transient features, we wish to have the observations made at a time when the HST is as far away from the Earth's radiation belt hot spots as possible. ie minimize the cosmic ray flux.
