Abstract -0.15 truein During an HST-FOS-UV Cycle 4 investigation we studied a unique sample of low redshift QSOs with weak narrow- line OIII emission in order to check for the presence of broad absorption lines (BALs) due to CIV. For various reasons we believed that such a sample might exhibit a high incidence of BALs. Indeed we found that 6 of the 18 objects in the sample (33\%) exhibited BALs, which is significantly higher than the fraction of ~ 10\% found in studies of large samples of radio quiet QSOs. This high incidence of BALs found in weak-OIII objects suggests that large BAL region covering factor models might be viable, provided there is a way to destroy resonance line scattered radiation which is often taken to be an observational constraint requiring BAL region covering factors to be < 0.2. Since 4 of the 6 the weak-OIII BAL QSOs in the sample were IRAS-selected, this is a serious possibility due to the suspected presence of dust. It may be that the presence of BALs has less to do with the weakness of OIII emission, but is more the result of being IRAS- selected. Therefore, we propose to make a study of 17 IRAS-selected objects in order to refine our understanding of criteria that can predict the presence of BALs in spectra. The nature of 7 of the objects is already known (4 have BALs) and so we propose HST-FOS-UV observations of an additional 10 objects. This work has relevance to investigations of QSO geometries, intrinsic QSO properties, and possible evolutionary phenomena in QSOs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7617( 8) - 08/28/98 13:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ One orbit.
