Abstract This program is designed to test the potential guide stars and the FGSs in which they may be acquired during the October 1998 CVZ passage for the HDF-South. A low- resolution spectrum of a bright QSO at z=2.25 will be taken with grating G230L (STIS/MAMA) to check that its line-of-sight is unobscured by extremely optically thick intervening systems. An early image with STIS CCD of the QSO field, together with the WFPC2 and NICMOS images of neighboring (5 arcmin away), parallel fields, will allow an assessment of any potential problem caused by bright stars, scattered light, and related issues, and will provide an exciting preview of the entire HDF- South science program. These test observations should be made during fall 1997 when the ORIENT will be the same as for the October 1998 CVZ passage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7633( 11) - 03/12/98 14:32 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In this test program, we are trying to: (1) test the same guide stars in the same locations within the same FGSs as they will be observed in the actual HDF- South in fall-1998; (2) better assess the effects of the several relatively bright stars which may be placed at different places within the WFPC2/STIS/NICMOS field of view, depending on the exact final position of the specified aperture location; (3) get a preview at bright magnitude levels of the contents of the HDF-South field; (4) get a low-resolution spectrum of the Ly-alpha forest along the line-of-sight to the QSO. The program consists of - 2 primary orbits with STIS/MAMA/G230L to get a low-res spectrum of the QSO - 1 primary orbits with STIS/50CCD to image the QSO field - 3 parallel orbits with WFPC2/F606W and the NIC3/F160W with ORIENT 50.5D (mid-range for desired ORIENT over October 1998 CVZ period) Real Time Justification ----------------------- None.
