Abstract This program will use the STIS to observe the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Titan in the UV. The goal is to determine weak absorption features, due to atmospheric gases, as well as Raman scattering features in the spectra of Jupiter, Saturn and Titan. The Moon will be used as a solar analog to reduce planetary fluxes to reflectivities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ One orbit will be devoted to each target. The STIS long slit will be oriented along the central meridians of Jupiter and Saturn, to determine the variation in absorptions and Raman scattering as a function of longitude on those planets. This will require that those observations be made near planetary opposition, to permit observations away from nominal optimum spacecraft roll. The Moon will be observed in "ambush" mode three times during one orbit. Instrument parameters for STIS will be identical for the Moon and the other, to maximize the cancellation of the STIS' characteristics during the division of spectra to produce reflectivity curves.
