Abstract We shall obtain STIS observations of Canopus (Alpha Car), the nearest (96 pc) supergiant star. Canopus is an early F supergiant with a extremely thin convection zone, yet it shows significant X-ray emission from a very hot corona. UV chromospheric and transition (TR) region emission line fluxes will be used to determine the emission measure (EM) distribution and radiative losses from these regions, while the nonthermal turbulent motions in the TR will be measured from the emission profiles. EUVE and ASCA coronal spectroscopy are also being sought and will allow the coronal temperature and EM distributions to be established. In conjuction with similar data for Beta Dra (G2 Ib-IIa) we shall investigate how the TR turbulent energy relates to the observed coronal energy input for supergiants with differing convection zone depths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7764( 20) - 01/09/02 14:06 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The objective of the original GHRS Cycle 5 proposal was to obtain medium- resolution and echelle spectra of selected FUV and MUV intervals containing key diagnostic emission lines. GHRS observations were attempted late in Cycle 5, but failed owing to a guide star acquisition failure. In this carryover STIS program, a sequence of medium (E140M, E230M) and echelle (E140H, E230H) are used to record the ultraviolet spectrum of Canopus. The specification of the observing sequence allows complete coverage of the FUV spectrum, rather than the prior fragmentary GHRS coverage. The most important spectral interval (1200 -1700 A) is also where the stellar flux is weakest and can only be fully covered at medium resolution. The predicted local count rates are all well below the MAMA limits; the global count rates for th elonger wavelength observations are larger BUT ALL at least a factor of two below the global limit. Simulatations below 1900 A use the observed IUE SWP high dispersion spectrum. Simulations above 1900 A use the Kurucz F0 I photospheric specturm normalised to V=4.4 (i.e 5 magnitudes below the true V=-0.7 when using aperture 0.2x0.05ND) and also checked by normalising to the observed flux between 1800 and 1900 A. Real Time Justification ----------------------- There are no special restrictions on these observations. STScI may wish to note that Canopus lies very close to the CVZ at certain times of year, which may allow for more efficient scheduling. We are conducting a coordinated study of the outer atmosphere of Canopus involving HST, ASCA, and EUVE. The ASCA/EUVE observations provide spectra that allow the coronal temperature and emission measure distribution to be determined. In addition, coronal elemental abundances should be obtainable. NB These observations do not require coordinated scheduling. The ASCA and EUVE have already been obtained.
